Regions Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center, a nationally recognized burn center, and the largest provider of inpatient psychiatric care in the East Twin Cities Metro. Of the current licensed beds, 100 beds are dedicated to inpatient psychiatry. The hospital cares for individuals suffering from substance use disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, schizophrenia spectrum, bipolar, depressive, and anxiety disorders, among others. The population is largely heterogeneous, with patients from a wide variety of demographic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Regions is the largest provider of charity care in the East Metro, and the second largest provider of charity care in Minnesota—in 2017, Regions Hospital provided uncompensated care for more than 55,000 patients.
Regions added an additional 20 inpatient psychiatry beds in 2021 (to total of 120) and with the repurposing of another Health System’s entire St Paul Hospital, we anticipate large increases in the number of psychiatric patients that will be seen on our inpatient psychiatry units, in our emergency department, and on our medical services. With the addition of a PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Resident in 2020, we have ongoing plans to extend our clinical pharmacy services not only to the increased inpatient psychiatry beds, but also to our outpatient partial hospitalization program, mental health crisis center in the ED, and Consultation and Liaison Psychiatry Service, among others.
As a teaching hospital, we regularly have medical, physician assistant, occupational therapy, nursing, and pharmacy students, psychiatry residents, physician assistant fellows, and PGY1 pharmacy residents participate in team rounds. This interprofessional care and learning environment is ideal for a PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy resident to grow as a capable specialist caring for a diverse patient population, and also to grow as a teacher and mentor to pharmacy learners, and learners in other disciplines. Educational partnerships with our psychiatry residency program and physician assistant psychiatry fellowship program will provide a unique learning opportunity for our resident. Quality improvement projects and research will help further demonstrate how psychiatric pharmacists and residents improve patient care, with the hopes of further expanding our program.
