The Automation Developer supports the Office of Institutional Research (IR) by designing, automating, and maintaining the critical data workflows that drive university reporting and survey operations. This role focuses on significantly reducing manual processes, improving data integrity, and supporting cross-unit initiatives-including Strategy & Innovation and the MBA+ program.
This is an ideal opportunity for an early-career technical professional with strong programming skills who is interested in applying automation, data systems, and process improvement within a higher education environment. This part-time, hourly (non-exempt) position is based in Fremont, CA, with an expected workload of 20-29 hours per week. The role follows a hybrid work schedule, with three days onsite and two days remote per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Automation & Workflow Development
Design, test, and implement end-to-end automation workflows using Google App Scripts and Qualtrics APIs.
Develop and maintain custom scripts (Python, JavaScript) to streamline data preparation and repetitive tasks.
Implement robust logging, error handling, and technical documentation to ensure automated processes are sustainable and transparent.
2. Survey Operations & Reporting
Support survey preparation, deployment, and tracking using the Qualtrics platform.
Build and manage trigger-based workflows for automated survey distribution.
Contribute to recurring and ad hoc reporting efforts, ensuring stakeholders have timely access to survey data and tracking metrics.
3. Data Integration & Quality Assurance
Manage and integrate data across multiple sources, including Google Sheets, Excel, CSV files, Qualtrics, and Salesforce.
Perform rigorous quality assurance checks to ensure data accuracy and reliability across all automated outputs.
Support data preparation for the Office of IR and select projects associated with the MBA+ program.
Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field (Master's degree preferred).
Proficiency in at least one scripting language for data automation (e.g., Python).
Experience working with structured data and spreadsheets (Google Sheets, CSV).
Maintains a professional demeanor and positive attitude while working collaboratively across departments.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the initiative to identify and proactively solve workflow inefficiencies.
Preferred Technical Skills:
Google Apps Script, JavaScript, SQL.
Experience with spreadsheet automation tools (e.g., pandas, OpenPyXL).
Advanced knowledge of Qualtrics (Survey Flow, Embedded Data, and API usage).
Familiarity with content creation or streaming tools (e.g., Canva, OBS Studio).
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
