St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency program is a comprehensive program focused on enhancing clinical skills through direct patient care activities. The program is designed to prepare the resident for a critical care position in an acute care facility and/or an advanced fellowship in an area of critical care or research. The program emphasizes clinical practice and consists of 8 months of core (required) learning experiences in specific aspects of critical care pharmacy and four months of elective opportunities. Core learning experiences include Orientation (3 weeks in July), Medical Intensive Care 1 (6-7 weeks in July/August), Medical Intensive Care 2, Trauma Intensive Care, Neurocritical care, Cardiovascular Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, and a dedicated research month in December (Research Fundamentals and Application). Elective learning experiences offered include Cardiology, Solid Organ Transplant - Abdominal or Lung, Decentralized Critical Care Staffing (afternoon/evenings in MICU), Neonatal Intensive Care, Critical Care Infectious Disease, and an advanced experience in one of the required core rotations. Required longitudinal rotations include: critical care weekend staffing (12 month longitudinal, every 3rd weekend; starts August), Pharmacy Leadership, Medication Safety, and Quality (12 month longitudinal), and Research Fundamentals and Application (12 month longitudinal with focused month in December).

Norton Thoracic Institute at SJHMC is home to one of the busiest lung transplant program in the United States. The lung transplant program, which launched in April 2007, cares for approximately 1,000 post-transplant patients and ranks in the top 5 in the nation for overall lung transplant volume. We consistently rank as one of the top hospitals for neurology and neurosurgery by U.S. News and World Report. The emergency department treats in excess of 70,000 patients a year. The hospital has a 72 bed, level III Neonatal ICU and a total of 126 adult ICU beds split between the Neurology ICU, Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Trauma ICU, and Cardiothoracic ICU. SJHMC is a Joint Commission Certified Advanced Primary Stroke, Spinal Cord and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and Advanced Certified Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Center, and is an American College of Cardiology Chest Pain PCI accredited site. These services draw complex patients and, as a resident at St. Joseph’s, you will be an integral part of these medical services.
Special Requirements for Acceptance:Applicants for the PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency should have graduated from a doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program and completed a clinically oriented PGY1 residency in pharmacy before beginning their Critical Care Residency. Residents are encouraged to obtain an Arizona pharmacist prior to starting. A completed residency application packet must include a PhORCAS application, letter of intent, curriculum vitae, official transcripts of all pharmacy education, and three letters of recommendation. This organization does not provide work visa (H1B visa) sponsorship.
