The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.
The Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school currently offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Engagement Journalism.
The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY is seeking an Events Manager to take strategic and operational ownership of all public and private Newmark J-School events, from inception to completion. These events include campus community events (e.g., book talks, film screenings, and panel discussions), large-scale signature events (e.g., open houses, commencement, and homecoming), and private (e.g., fundraisers, board meetings, private lunches, and receptions to cultivate and steward donors). The role will be housed within the Communications department, reporting to the Director of Communications, and work closely with Academic Affairs and other departments across the school.
The ideal candidate will be a creative problem-solver who manages a dynamic portfolio of event venues across the city and restaurants close to the school; takes note of experts and industry leaders who would be ideal to host at the school; stays abreast of local, national, and global news; and effectively collaborates with a range of partners, including campus departments, corporate partners, and other organizations. The Events Manager must understand how events elevate the profile of the school and ensure the school fulfills its responsibility to its students by serving as a hub of thought leadership in the industry.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Plans and executes all events from inception to completion, including concept development, implementation, and post-event evaluation.
Identifies target objectives and audiences while collaborating with departments to ensure events align with the school's strategic priorities.
Coordinates calendars across staff, faculty, and administration while managing a comprehensive campus-wide events calendar.
Contacts and negotiates with venues, vendors, and caterers to secure optimal locations and services for all school functions.
Develops and manages guest lists, including VIP outreach, RSVPs tracking, and on-site greeting of attendees at events.
Creates detailed programming and run-of-show documents while coordinating with speakers, panelists, and managing their travel arrangements.
Manages, administers, and optimizes the space reservation system and event management platform, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
Coordinates with facilities and tech teams for space, event setup, cleanup, signage, and A/V requirements for all presentations.
Builds and maintains relationships with potential event partners, sponsors, and other stakeholders in the journalism community.
Works with the Finance team on budget management, including processing invoices and vendor payments in a timely manner.
Partners with the Communications Director to develop event messaging, promotional materials, and community updates.
Attends all events in person to ensure smooth execution and resolve any issues that may arise during the function.
This is a hybrid position. The Events Manager must be able to attend events in person, whether on weekdays, evenings, or weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree and six years' relevant experience required.
The following qualifications are preferred:
A minimum of five years of event production experience, preferably in nonprofit or corporate environment.
Understanding of higher education environment, particularly around commencement, admission open houses, and alumni reunions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent organization skills.
Enthusiasm for journalism and journalism education.
Proficiency in MS Office, Zoom Webinar, Event Management Systems, Paperless Post, Eventbrite, Link Tracking, and Email Marketing.
Familiarity with systems related to event management, such as WordPress.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggle multiple projects, and meet all deadlines.
Decisive and flexible; maintain solid judgment; keep a cool head under pressure.
Ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will not be offered for this position.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Oversees planning and coordination of a variety of events to meet Campus or University goals.
Manages an ongoing calendar of events and creates overall scheduling plans for Campus facilities.
Works with Campus units or executives, student groups, and outside organizations to develop event concepts, plan detailed programs, and orchestrate successful logistical arrangements to enhance program success.
Prepares and manages budgets; manages contracts and ongoing vendor arrangements.
Prepares and manages guest lists, invitations, and arrangements for featured guests and speakers.
Coordinates with marketing, communications, development, and public relations staffs to develop and execute effective event marketing plans.
Develops expertise in state-of-the-art technology and media support; arranges for the most appropriate equipment, and assures staff receive appropriate training.
Prepares event briefing documents for key executives and media relations personnel.
May supervise a permanent staff, as well as staff hired to operate large events.
Reports to senior management on the success of events, including financial outcomes.
Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$82,928 - $90,375/year (Salary range will increase to $90,838 - $98,995/year as of 9/1/25 per the new contract). Salary commensurate with education and experience.
