Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The Berger lab is seeking a bright and motivated Research Technician I or II. The individual will be responsible for managing stocks of cell lines, plasmids, and murine models. The individual will perform experiments directed at understanding mechanisms of lung tumor development and identifying strategies for lung cancer therapy, as well as perform lab managerial duties such as inventory maintenance and training of new laboratory personnel.

Responsibilities

Research Technician I:

• Tissue culture of primary and immortalized human and rodent cell lines
• Molecular biology techniques such as protein extraction, immunoprecipitation, Western blotting
• Microbiology techniques such as cloning, maxipreps, minipreps of bacterial cultures
• Preparation of lentivirus for genetic studies
• Perform and modify documented protocols and assays.
• Manage the animal colony of the lab including genotyping and animal handling
• Maintain laboratory records and compile data on experiments and assays.
• Interpret and report on experimental results.
• Perform statistical analysis of test results and prepare written reports on work performed.
• Operate and carry out basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Order and maintain appropriate levels of supplies.
• May supervise work-study students.
• Other duties as assigned

Research Technician II:

All responsibilities of Research Technician I, plus:

• Identify methodological problems in research protocol and implement modifications to optimize experimental results.
• Prepare and present written or oral progress reports concerning studies including assembly, organization, and interpretation of data.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Research Technician I:

• Bachelor's degree in related scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Demonstrated scientific knowledge in the area of study
• Demonstrated basic laboratory skills

Research Technician II:

All minimum qualifications of Research Technician I, plus:

• 2 years of experience working in a lab outside of school coursework

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Research Technician I:

• Independent research experience separate from school lab experience
• Highly motivated and intellectually curious
• Experience with rodent handling and procedures
• Excellent written and verbal skills
• Ability to maintain organized laboratory notebook and computer files
• Exceptional attention to detail

Research Technician II:

All preferred qualifications of Research Technician I, plus:

• Experience with standard laboratory techniques, including cell culture, flow cytometry, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence/confocal microscopy

Research Technician I: The hourly pay range for this position is from $22.87 to $32.56 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

Research Technician II: The hourly pay range for this position is from $26.48 to $37.70 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
