Founded in 1961, TLHD is the oldest operating summer stock theatre in Minnesota. Formerly partnered with St. Cloud State, TLHD has been operating independently as a presenting theatre since 2009. Professional theatres whose shows have been presented include Actors Theatre of Minnesota, The History Theatre, The Guthrie, Children’s Theatre Company, Minneapolis Musical Theatre, Daleko Arts, The Old Log, Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, Pioneer Place, Park Square, Triple Espresso, and many more.
TLHD audiences consist of permanent residents, seasonal residents, and visitors to Central Minnesota’s Lakes Region. TLHD’s campus is a former resort that was converted into a 22-acre theatre campus with a 272-seat proscenium theatre, wooded areas and access to Lake Le Homme Dieu. Each summer season offers an eclectic array of 7-8 theatrical performances and concerts.
Theatre L’Homme Dieu operates on an annual budget of $640,000. Income is generated evenly from earned and contributed sources. Exercising fiscal discipline, TLHD has a four-month unrestricted operating reserve, manages cash flow conservatively, capitalizes depreciation, and balances its budget. Its small board of directors is both a governing and a working board.
Theatre L’Homme Dieu is in the initial stages of a major gifts campaign to ensure its ongoing legacy, indispensable to its Alexandria stakeholders. Goals include expansion of artistic activities as well as stabilization of the facility.
The Executive and Artistic Director (EAD) serves as the Chief Executive Officer of TLHD, responsible for leadership in its administrative, artistic, and development functions. The EAD reports to the Board; a year-round Operations Manager and seasonal production and administrative staff report to the EAD. The position is year-round and full-time, with residency in the Alexandria area highly desirable, especially during the primary production season.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Leadership
Demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for the arts and maintain a positive legacy for ongoing and future opportunities for TLHD.
Present, inform and motivate groups about TLHD’s mission and programming.
Work effectively with board members, colleagues, donors, and volunteers.
Attend performances and official functions as the official spokesperson of TLHD.
Develop annual plans and goals for theatre operations.
Refer major policy matters to the board of directors for final decisions.
Join and participate in professional associations and serve on boards and committees deemed necessary to advance the mission of TLHD.
Attend seminars, classes, and professional development activities to enhance connections with other arts organizations, artists, and agents.
Administration
Develop, monitor, and manage budgets, as approved by the Board.
Manage taxes, insurance, and banking details.
Oversee bookkeeping.
Hire, supervise, and evaluate staff based upon annual staffing plan approved by the Board.
Create job descriptions, advertise, interview, and orient staff.
Manage human resource issues for employees, consultants and volunteers
Board of Directors
Serve as ex-officio, non-voting member of the Board and Executive Committee.
Report at Board meetings on the state of theatre operations.
Make recommendations on matters requiring Board attention or approval.
Operations Management
Productions (including front of house staff, patron experiences, hospitality).
Public events (excluding performances and productions).
Campus facilities and grounds.
Database management.
Volunteer management.
Develop and coordinate activities necessary to utilize the theatre grounds beyond the regular performance schedule.
Negotiate and approve contracts and agreements with suppliers, outside agencies, and other organizational entities for ongoing maintenance of property.
Marketing, Public Relations and External Communications
Develop marketing/media communications plan and manage implementation.
Attend and participate in local/regional business, arts, and networking activities within the community on a regular basis.
Organize and implement promotional campaigns.
Manage all media and social media communications for TLHD.
Artistic Programming
Identify shows and events for presentation or production under TLHD sponsorship.
Negotiate and secure contracts for all presentations and productions.
Maintain effective professional relationships with booking agents, other venues and arts agencies to promote TLHD and its mission.
Determine and manage selection and approval of equipment, vendors, and supplies.
Development
Develop an organizational fundraising plan, and direct, coordinate and oversee its implementation.
Write or oversee the writing and submission of grants for general operational programs, special projects, and programs.
Create and oversee relationships with sponsors and donors, maintaining confidentiality while managing their portfolios.

Desired qualifications
A degree in theatre or equivalent professional experience
Experience helping to advance artistic aims at a professional theatre
An eye for quality theatrical productions
At least three years of successful management of a staff of three people or more
Willingness to work on a dynamic and flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
A core belief in and practice of the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and comfortable with public speaking
Fundraising experience and acumen with proven results
Proficient understanding and use of finance and financial reports
Significant experience interacting with nonprofit boards, volunteers, and funders (individual and institutional)
