POSITION SUMMARY: This position is the chief management leader for the New England Section of the American Water Works Association (NE-AWWA), responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic growth of the organization. This is a remote position. REPORTS TO: The position reports to the Section Board of Trustees (Board) and under the general supervision of the Chair of New England Section (or designee as provided by the New England Section Chair), the Executive Director directs and oversees all functions of the organization. DUTIES: Management and oversight of day-to-day operations of the Section, NE-AWWA point of contact, development of membership outreach and support, assist in development and execution of training and educational programs, contract negotiations, office administration, collaboration with NE-AWWA Board to revise and manage Section policies, budgeting, financial reporting, planning and marketing events, fund raising, implementation of strategic plan, and management of communications. Other duties as assigned by the Section Board and/or Chair. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Leadership and Management: • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, information necessary for the Board to function properly, and to make informed decisions. • Provide day-to-day management of Section operations, administration, and functions. • Ability to adapt to changing board membership and Section Chair annually, while maintaining continuity and implement action plans, making decisions, and setting priorities. • Recruit, retain, and manage highly qualified staff as authorized by the Board to meet Section objectives and other duties as assigned by the Board. • Work collaboratively with Section Chair and Secretary to plan board meetings. • Ensure regulatory and legal compliance to mitigate risk to the Section tax exempt status, purpose, or brand. Organization Mission and Strategy: • Execute the Board’s adopted strategic plan, in collaboration with the Board. Financial Management: • Oversee preparation and management of the Section’s budget with the Treasurer. • Work collaboratively with the Executive Committee to oversee all matters that pertain to the financial health and management of the Section including, but not limited to, monthly financial statements, tax filings, financial review, investment management, and all necessary bookkeeping and record keeping activities. • Review, negotiate and sign all Board approved agreements and contracts entered into on behalf of the organization. Membership Development: • Work collaboratively with Association staff and volunteers to support membership growth and retention. • Assist committees and staff in organizing and promoting member engagement/outreach events to help ensure targeted attendance and participation. Training and Education: • Oversee the execution of member forums, webinars, training programs, and conferences, including awarding of professional education credits. • Oversee the development of new program offerings to meet the changing needs of members. Communications: • Act as a spokesperson for all media, public engagements, and stakeholder settings. • Work with staff and volunteers to create and implement Section communication strategies. • Serve as Managing Editor of the Section website and Section e-newsletter. General: • Participate and attend AWWA and NE-AWWA meetings. • Participate and attend local and national nonprofit and association management, and leadership seminars, conferences, and webinars, as approved by the Board.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS: • A Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in nonprofit administration or related field. Nonprofit professional certification, association management certification, and water industry knowledge is preferred. • Senior nonprofit association management experience with emphasis on members and volunteers preferred. • Experience in planning events, meetings, and fundraising. • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate board member relationships. • High level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to convey the vision of the New England Section’s strategic plan to staff, committees, volunteers, members, and business partners. • Experience with budget management and financial planning. • Excellent communicator. Strong public speaking ability. Strong communication skills, including written, presentation, verbal, and listening. • Technical skills, such as leading virtual meetings and webinars and spreadsheets. • Professionalism and confidence to work with and gain the credibility and respect of board, staff, and volunteer committee members. • Self-directed, and flexible, with strong organizational abilities including planning, prioritizing, delegating, program development and task facilitation. • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff, board members and section members. • Position requires some travel.

The New England Section is one of forty-three Sections (chapters) of the American Water Works
Association (AWWA). AWWA has over 50,000 members throughout North America and the world. Its
mission is to provide solutions for the New England region to effectively manage water, the world’s most
important resource. The New England Section provides training, education, networking, and opportunities
for members to get involved at the local level. Membership consists of approximately 1,400 individual
members, over 160-member utilities and 35 service providers located in Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
