Position overview Position title: Associate or Full Professor of Teaching in Technology and Information Management Salary range: A reasonable estimate for the academic-year (nine-month basis) salary range is $145,000 - $165,000 for Associate Professor of Teaching and $170,000 - $200,000 for full Professor of Teaching. Starting salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Anticipated start: July 1, 2025, with the academic year beginning in September 2025. Terminal (Ph.D.) degree requirements must be met by June 30, 2025 for employment effective July 1, 2025 and beyond.

Position Description
The Technology and Information Management (TIM) Program in the Baskin School of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a position at the rank of associate professor of teaching or professor of teaching. The Technology and Information Management program at UC Santa Cruz provides a rigorous curriculum at the intersection of computer science, software engineering, economics, and technology management. The core competency of TIM students is how to create products that are either entirely computational, or have a strong computational element. The program serves diverse students who are motivated by using technology to effect positive societal change.
UC Santa Cruz is one of 10 campuses in the University of California system and is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an association of the top research universities in the US. The Technology and Information Management (TIM) Program is part of the Baskin School of Engineering. Baskin Engineering is home to six departments contributing to the richness of its research in materials, devices and instruments; engineering mathematics; computing; and health engineering. The TIM undergraduate B.S. degree was established in 2011 and is unique within the University of California system.
With a rich history of embracing groundbreaking interdisciplinary work and building deep research ties with industry, the UCSC residential campus is nestled in a redwood forest above the city of Santa Cruz, while the nearby Santa Clara campus affords unique and exciting opportunities for collaboration with industry researchers, as well as with faculty and students at other San Francisco Bay Area universities.
We are seeking a dynamic candidate who can provide vision and leadership for the Technology and Information Management program. The mission of the TIM program is important to society. Our interactions with companies, governments, and nonprofits are increasingly mediated by information technology, and the products our society creates are predominantly technology infused. With the advent of generative AI technology, many products will have generative AI or other core machine learning capabilities embedded within. There is also a growing understanding of the importance of design methods and design thinking in the creation of all products, especially those involving computation. Software architecture also provides important perspectives on the creation of web and mobile apps which can handle internet scale. The Technology and Information Management program graduates students who can integrate these disciplines and create novel technologies to address societal challenges.
We seek candidates with expertise in one or more areas of technology or product management and design. Candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
Artificial intelligence and technology management;
Design methods for technological products;
AI and economics (such as AI driven pricing models);
Software architecture of large scale internet information systems;
Sustainable design and operation of technology and information systems to support decarbonization; and/or
Due to the diversity of topics within technology and information management, we are also interested in candidates with expertise in technology management, broadly conceived.
The selected candidate is expected to teach and carry out administrative and programmatic responsibilities. The requirements for the position are to develop and teach courses within the undergraduate curriculum; lead strategic planning efforts for the program, evaluate the effectiveness of the program and make changes to improve program curriculum, and provide better education and service to students; establish relationships with industry, in order to inform curriculum decisions, contribute to student placement in internships and full-time positions, and solicit industry projects for students; work as a bridge between this program, the Computer Science and Engineering Department, and Economics Department; and serve as the programs representative and advocate in the Senate faculty. The incumbent is expected to contribute to technology innovation in Baskin Engineering and beyond and to develop an education or management research program, supported by external grants, driven by personal intellectual inquiry.

The working titles for this position are Associate Professor of Teaching and Professor of Teaching, while the payroll title is Lecturer with Security of Employment. These titles are used differently at the University of California (UC) than at other institutions. In the UC system, appointees to the Professor of Teaching title series have all the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate, and 'Lecturer with Security of Employment' is directly analogous to tenure. These titles earn sabbatical credit, they are eligible for summer salary, and they have Principal Investigator status for the purpose of grant applications and administration. As with all faculty, appointees are regularly reviewed for further advancement and salary increases and they are evaluated on achievements in the areas of teaching excellence, professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, and University and public service.
The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)
Ph.D.; or M.S./M.A. or M.F.A. plus five years professional experience. Degree areas are in engineering (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, biomedical engineering, applied math, statistics, information science, or related field), management (e.g., business, accounting, business and public policy, management of organizations, marketing, operations and information technology management, entrepreneurship, or related field), social sciences (e.g., economics, finance, public policy, or related field). Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered. It is expected that the terminal (Ph.D.) degree requirements will be completed by June 30, 2025.
Demonstrated record of consistent and sustained excellence in university teaching or equivalent industrial presentation experience.
Demonstrated experience either working in industry or working closely with industry.
Demonstrated experience in mentoring and advising.
Demonstrated record of sustained professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity.
