Position Description
The MSO Executive Director will report directly to the Executive Board. This is a hands-on position which requires a candidate who is self-directed, motivated, and results driven. The Executive Director will be a proven leader responsible for managing a team of two employees and contractors to implement strategic goals and oversee the organization's operations. This role includes managing all association duties, including day-to-day operations, external representation, legislative matters, third-party relations, membership, continuing education, public relations, and communication. The following are the essential responsibilities: • Implement the strategic goals of MSO set by the Board. • Build strong relationships with MSO's volunteer leaders, members, and external stakeholders, including elected officials. • Lead and develop a competent, agile, and goal-oriented team. • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and breakthrough change; make recommendations to the Board. • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the association. • Represent MSO at organizational and professional events. • Foster and grow relationships with key stakeholders, elected officials and community leaders. • Monitor and track relevant legislation; prepare legislative testimony and maintain databases. • Participate in lobbying events and assist members with legislative matters. • Oversee daily operations within the constraints of the annual budget. • Develop, recommend, and present the annual budget in cooperation with the Executive Board. • Enhance member benefits and explore new options, including continuing education seminars • Engage in member retention and recruitment, including outreach to non-members and student members at optometry schools. • Additional responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
The Executive Director is committed to the mission and purpose of the MSO while demonstrating proven leadership experience. Other qualifications include: • 5+ years of experience in non-profit leadership roles (e.g., Executive Director, COO, Chief of Staff, or Director) • Proven track record of leadership and organizational growth in previous roles • Strong relationship-building skills to engage members and volunteers • Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, and public speaking skills • Passion for strategic goal-setting, revenue growth, and value creation • Strong business acumen, including financial management, budget preparation, implementation, and forecasting • Familiarity with information technology systems and website management • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) • Bachelor’s degree required • Availability for occasional travel and after-hours work/events, including some weekends • Resides in New England or willingness to relocate • Willingness to work in a remote / hybrid work environment
