Brookhaven National Laboratory is a nonprofit research and development institution whose purpose is to advance ideas and knowledge through a multidisciplinary program of basic and applied research. The Laboratory Protection Division in conjunction with the Security Operations Group currently has a full-time opportunity for a Security Specialist.
The Laboratory Protection Division at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking to hire a Security Specialist to provide Planning and Design Basis Threat support for the Security Operations Program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Maintain the Designed Basis Threat (DBT) Program and ensuring compliance to related DOE Orders and guidance.
* Assist with maintaining surveillance on the Chemical Management System for hazardous materials that may rise above the designated thresholds for the DBT.
* Assist with development and update of Hazards Analysis, Security Risk Assessments (SRA) and Threat Assessments.
* Assist with security planning to include maintenance and updating of the Site Security Plan and DBT Plan.
* Identify strengths and weaknesses of security plans, policies, systems, and procedures and make recommendations for improvements.
* Operate as a member of the Operations Security Group.
* Assist in conducting Incident of Security Concern Inquiries.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Bachelor's degree in law enforcement, security, chemistry, or a related field based on 2:1 (experience: college) years.
* 4 years related work experience in protection and response for a large-scale, complex facility or program.
* U.S. citizenship is required and the ability to obtain a DOE "Q" clearance.
* Ability to operate independently.
* Ability to communicate concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing, with all levels of management, employees, guests, and representatives of regulatory agencies is required.
* Ability to prepare professional reports and develop program materials and plans, make recurring, formal presentations, and provide effective training in security concepts to varied and diverse laboratory audiences, including senior management.
* Excellent working knowledge of computer systems, database and spreadsheet management, Microsoft Office products, and web-based business systems is necessary.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Master's degree is preferred.
* A working knowledge of DOE requirements, in particular, DOE O 470.4B, SAFEGUARDS AND SECURITY PROGRAM.
* A working knowledge of all applicable CERCLA, RCRA, and DOE regulations and orders for hazardous materials.
* Understanding of radiological material in addition to a chemical management system and the Global Harmonization System (GHS), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and other associated resources.
This position is subject to 24 hour on-call in the event of any emergency and may require irregular work hours. Travel requirement less than 10%.
Relocation and housing cost will not be offered for this position.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $78,400 - $117,600
year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
