Description:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Communications, the Director of Public Relations is an experienced communications professional with a sharp eye for a good story and the exemplary writing skills to tell it well. They are a relationship builder with a high EQ who has experience managing stakeholder/client expectations and balancing them with institutional priorities. The Director of Public Relations will lead multiple projects while also being a team player willing to pitch in on tasks that may be outside their usual responsibilities. They will be a voracious consumer of news who recognizes opportunities to leverage trending stories to promote our brand. Some evening and weekend hours may be required in support of special events and projects.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Performs public and media relations activities for assigned schools including content creation (news stories and articles), writing press releases and media advisories, garnering media placement, and responding to media requests.
Acts as marketing, communications, and creative services liaison for assigned schools – assisting with collateral, events, publications, newsletters, website updating, photo/video library, etc.
Provides support for university initiatives and events.
Supports marketing and communications team with creative ideation, crisis troubleshooting, and assisting colleagues as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required.
Five to eight years' experience in communications and public relations, preferably with experience in education, higher education, or the nonprofit sector.
Successful track record of pitching and placing stories to media.
Strong collaborative and cross-functional skills.
Experience with social media and web content.
Crisp, lively writing with ability to frame content to appeal to different audiences.
Must be facile with marketing, rhetorical and news writing, and able to translate the University's core messaging into a variety of voices and styles.
An understanding of the publication production process.
Ability to work on several projects at once in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
Experience with planning and executing promotional events.
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Constant Contact, MailChimp, Meltwater and Cision.
Knowledge of AP style.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with video shooting and editing preferred.
Established regional and/or national press contacts.
