Bard NYC is accepting applications for a Deputy Director. The Deputy Director plays a key role in the day-to-day operations of the Bard NYC academic program in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, overseeing essential components of the study-away program including a broad range of student leadership and career development activities central to Bard NYC's mission. Academic rigor, creative and critical thinking, and commitment to fostering a community that supports diversity and accessibility is at the heart of all programs associated with Bard College and the Deputy Director will excel at working with and advocating for the diverse student body enrolled in the program. The Deputy Director reports to the Academic Director of Bard NYC and works closely with other Bard colleagues in New York City and at Bard's main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. This is a full-time, exempt, year-round position.
The Deputy Director will lead the admissions process and meet regularly with program participants to help guide their experience. The position includes administrative and office work for Bard NYC. It is expected that the Deputy Director will work closely with a team of colleagues to increase student satisfaction, drive enrollment, and strengthen and expand institutional partnerships, both with internship host organizations and academic partner institutions. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and enhance a dynamic experience for students. Although not a requirement, this position may include teaching opportunities for qualified candidates. This position requires a person with energy and creativity, dedicated to working intensively both with college students and community partner organizations (a mix of for-profit, nonprofit and governmental agencies) where students intern. The Deputy Director will help create and maintain a supportive educational environment, which promotes students' individual growth, community responsibility, and academic achievement as they adapt and integrate into life in New York City.
Essential Duties
Overseeing the internship program, including building and maintaining a portfolio of internship organizations, managing the student internship matching process, cultivating relationships and working with internship organizations and mentors to ensure students have engaging and manageable experiences
Organizing and leading co-curricular and extra-curricular and professional programming, including a student orientation at the start of each program
Close work with residence life/student life staff on issues of student wellness
Working with the recruitment and marketing team to evaluate applicants, regularly update communications materials (website, social media, Annual Report, and press releases) and expand interest in the program
Manage the alumni network and include alumni in programming (speakers, coaches and advisors)
Maintain strong relationships with students through one-on-one advising (informally and formally), providing guidance and support for students' learning and personal development, attending to students' academic and personal concerns
Coaching students on professional development, connecting program experiences to their exploration of career pathways
Help students adjust to living and working in New York City and the United States
Maintain ongoing communication with partner schools regarding student health and safety, program updates, and new program developments
Basic financial and office management
About BardNYC Bard NYC is a new experiential learning undergraduate study-away program in New York City which pairs academic study with pre-professional internships. A semester combines 12-16 credits in a wide array of courses, including a core seminar, with an internship of 20-25 hours per week. The experience is accompanied by co-curricular programming to help students explore career pathways and build professional networks, as well as cultural and social programming to introduce students to New York City. The program builds off of the success of the Bard Globalization and International Affairs program, which has welcomed students from around the world for more than twenty years. Expanded academic and internship offerings allow students from a wide array of majors and career interests the opportunity to participate. Bard NYC is an enterprising intersection of academics and applied practices, engaging the interests of Bard's students and their peers from other U.S. and global institutions.
A commitment to student advocacy and an interest in daily interaction with a variety of creative and independent students is a must. Candidates should have the ability to build relationships with and support a student body that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, gender identity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.
Bachelor's degree
At least five years of work experience
Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills, written and verbal communication skills
Strong networking abilities
Efficient time management skills with experience managing multiple priorities, multitasking and meeting deadlines
Experience in event/program planning and management
Outstanding organizational and administrative capabilities
Ability to work independently as well as work effectively within a team environment and with student leadership
Ability to both manage details and see the big picture of programs and projects
Strong working knowledge of New York City
