Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Alumni Relations, the Associate Director will play a key role in executing the goals of the Development and Alumni Relations team at GS by planning and implementing programs and projects that strategically engage and provide tangible benefits to alumni and students. Main responsibilities include but are not limited to: Managing the Board of the General Studies Alumni Association (GSAA), working closely with the Leadership Gift Officer in the Columbia University Office of Alumni and Development (OAD) on initiatives including Giving Day, overseeing the nominating and selection of alumni award recipients, and supporting the planning process for annual signature school-wide alumni events including Homecoming, Orientation for new students and their families. Reunion and the Winter Reception. The Associate Director will collaborate with the Director of Alumni Relations by identifying student leaders, volunteer prospects for cultivation, building and maintaining relationships with alumni, and strengthening the pipeline for the GS alumni community.
Responsibilities
Oversees and maintains responsibility for the day-to-day management of the General Studies alumni needs and activities, including the planning and scheduling of meetings and logistics for the General Studies Alumni Association (GSAA) committee activities, provide direction and guidance for committees, and play a significant role in building and strengthening lasting relationships with alumni volunteers. As well as proactively identifying new alumni volunteers and developing strategies with the development team to ensure cultivation and engagement with the School.
Works closely with key alumni stakeholders while also collaborating with internal partners across the School and the Office of Alumni and Development (OAD) to create strategic materials for alumni outreach and engagement.
Oversees planning for alumni awards, including the Owl Award, Columbia Alumni Medal, and University Medal of Excellence as well as other awards and recognitions. Manage all stages from planning to execution of annual signature events such as Columbia Giving Day, Reunion, Family Orientation, and Alumni-Student Networking events.
Partners with the OAD Leadership Gift Officer to identify alumni volunteers for the development committee of the GSAA and create a plan around Giving Day and student philanthropy work.
Maintains event and program reporting, data collection, and metric analysis for all alumni relations activity to support goals of the Dean of GS.
Partners with colleagues across the University including the Columbia Alumni Association on events and programs.
With the Director of Alumni Relations plan, execute and manage programming and events including identifying opportunities for new intellectual alumni engagement opportunities both in New York City and regionally.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree desirable and a minimum of 4-6 years related experience required.
Two or more years of senior nonprofit management experience.
Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills required.
Excellent public speaking ability.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work in a pressured environment essential.
Understanding of working in a complex academic environment highly desirable.
Excellent interpersonal skills, tact, and diplomacy, sensitivity and mature judgement are essential.
Confidentiality and discretion are required.
Must be professional, organized, creative and efficient and able to work successfully as part of a team.
