Job Summary
The executive director is responsible for developing and implementing programs to support and accelerate entrepreneurial and commercialization activities at Indiana University. Programing should be created at all stages of the innovation process from ideation to commercialization or licensing including short courses, longer term programs, workshops, lectures, competitions, and social events aimed at bringing individuals together. Programming should target a mix of students, faculty, community partners, including possible investors and seasoned entrepreneurs to create mentoring opportunities and 'collision space' to drive the innovation ecosystem. The primary goal is to increase entrepreneurial activities at IU and to further economic development for the state of Indiana.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President of Indiana University Bloomington and works closely with internal and external advisory boards to define the strategic direction, engage the critical constituencies, and rally the resources and partnerships required for success.
Works closely with academic deans and other leadership from across the campus to design meaningful experiences to engage and excite their faculty, staff, and students to promote the integration of translational research.
Works closely with community partners, including corporations, nonprofits, and governmental organizations and networks to cultivate a dedicated cadre of mentors who actively engagement with the IU community; and to integrate IU's efforts into the fabric of regional economic develop effort.
Works closely with makerspaces and business accelerators at universities across the country to ensure that IU is connected to the larger ecosystem around creating, designing, learning, collaborating, building, and producing.
Collaborates with others to identify opportunities, and cultivates internal and external partnerships necessary to create a robust ecosystem of programs and services.
Promotes translational research and builds a pipeline of new products, services, and businesses from IU.
Builds campus partnerships to become the interdisciplinary hub and resource for the existing network of campus makerspaces, innovation centers, and entrepreneurship opportunities, and as a key resource for academic units interested in applied interdisciplinary innovation opportunities for their faculty, staff, and students.
Works independently and in a team environment to organize and produce high quality and actionable content and deliverables, such as trainings, workshop, and programming that will accelerate entrepreneurship, innovation, and commercialization on campus.
Builds and maintains high-level relationships with diverse stakeholders across the campus and university, including campus leadership, faculty, staff, and students.
Develops relationships with external constituencies as needed to coordinate and promote entrepreneurial efforts in the state.
Works independently and within teams to prioritize, manage, and coordinate multiple ongoing projects and tasks while satisfactorily meeting deadlines and desired outcomes.
Tracks operational and outcomes data/metrics on key metrics of success.
General Responsibilities
Contributes on senior leadership teams to formulate strategic planning and the highest-level operational objectives for areas of institutional advancement, partnerships and engagement.
Establishes long-term business plans and long-term strategic objectives.
Directs leadership staff who provide supervision to engagement teams.
Responsible for escalated operational issues, including human resources and/or people management situations.
Drives innovation and excellence advancing institutional goals through outreach to a wide variety of stakeholders; reviews and creates policies and procedures facilitating partnerships.
Determines overall budget for teams; reviews and approves financial proposals from direct reporting leaders; has significant fiscal responsibilities that require frequent interaction with executive leaders.
Provides expertise and identifies grant and/or funding opportunities and university resources; develops business relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders across the university and externally.
Stays up-to-date on new standards of engagement, advancement opportunities, collaborative programs, and available resources and works with other engagement leaders across departments and/or campuses in determining standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures; ensures the adoption and implementation by direct reporting leaders.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
5 years experience in strategic planning, relationship building, public relations, and/or development.
3 years of management experience Demonstrated leadership in academia, community, or government sectors

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
