Position Summary:

• The Supervising Attorney will co-supervise a clinic focused on eviction defense, housing law, and related civil justice issues alongside a law school faculty member. · The Supervising Attorney will provide legal services to low-income tenants facing eviction proceedings with the goal of helping tenants to maintain housing stability
• Services may include legal advice, representation in housing court, tenant/landlord mediation, and connecting clients to additional assistance and resources.
• This position offers attorneys the opportunity to engage in litigation and related housing-justice advocacy with the goal of providing safe and affordable housing for all people regardless of their race, ethnicity, disability status, or other protected class status.
• The Supervising Attorney will have significant latitude to shape the litigation docket and related legal projects, in coordination with the clinic's director.
• he Supervising Attorney's duties will include supervising second- and third-year law students' work on client matters, planning, facilitating, and participating in clinic seminar classes, and conducting outreach in Western New York and surrounding regions in order to build the clinic's network in the community and with other legal services nonprofits.
• The Supervising Attorney will be primarily responsible for covering these matters during the summer and inter-semester breaks, with assistance from law students.
• Depending on the successful candidate's professional aspirations, there will be opportunities to prepare for a career as a clinical professor by, among other things, engaging in training on clinical teaching methodologies, developing a portfolio of legal scholarship and other publications, and otherwise preparing for the law school clinical teaching market.
• The Supervising Attorney will be integrated into the Clinical Legal Education program and will be welcome to participate in the vibrant intellectual life of the School of Law, including faculty workshops, and other events. If the Supervising Attorney is not interested in pursuing a career in clinical teaching they will be provided preparation and support to continue their career at public interest organizations, private law firms, in-house positions, or other settings.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates should have at least two years of practice experience.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• An interest in and aptitude for teaching and supervision.
• An interest in the relevant areas of law.
• Demonstrated commitment to public interest or pro bono legal work.
• Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
• The Supervising Attorney must be a member of the New York Bar (currently licensed in New York) or be eligible to be admitted on motion, without examination, (see Judiciary Law § 90(i)(b); 22 NYCRR 520.10) to independently supervise law practice by students.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience litigating housing cases or similar matters in state or federal court is a strong plus.
