The Clinical Lab Specialist II performs laboratory procedures and related tasks such as preparing specimens; performing calculations and routine tests; maintaining specimen inventory and databases; mixing chemicals; and operating and performing maintenance on laboratory equipment. May assist technologists or research technicians with laboratory projects. Works under the supervision of the Pathology Manager in order to support clinical laboratory testing and/or research.
The work schedule for this position is 12:00 PM - 8:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job in order to carry out the primary responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Process/prepare biological specimens such as peripheral blood, bone marrow, buccal/saliva or other tissue samples for clinical testing and/or research.
- Freeze, store and ship specimens as required.
- Inventory processed specimens into the lab information management system, inventory databases or paper records as appropriate.
- Aliquot reagents, prepare solutions, stock supplies, and remove biohazard waste from lab areas.
- Monitor and maintain equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, centrifuges, and water baths.
- Set up and calibrate laboratory instruments; prepare calibration reagents, record and tabulate instrument data; and keep records.
- Consult with technologists, supervisor and/or manager regarding problematic samples.
Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Some College course work emphasizing laboratory science.
- Computer/keyboard proficiency.
- Attention to detail.
- Manual computation skills.
- Ability to communicate verbally in person, on the phone and in writing in a clear, concise and professional manner.
- Ability to work under high pressure in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with medical terminology.
Preferred:
- Some College course work emphasizing laboratory science.
- Proficiency in laboratory information systems.
- At least one year of laboratory experience preferred.
This position is patient facing and/or requires access to Fred Hutch clinical facilities. As such, full COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment, without exception. Booster doses are strongly recommended but not required. If declining a booster, completion of the COVID-19 Vaccination Status Form Questionnaire and COVID-19 Booster Declination Training is required. The hourly pay range for this position is from $21.56 to $30.69 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
