Job Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director, Annual Giving Programs, the Assistant Director, Affinity Giving ensures that supporting Caltech is a point of personal pride for each donor they work with. Managing a portfolio of annual giving donors who have specific affinities or relationships to the institute, the Assistant Director identifies, cultivates, and acquires high-level annual gifts within specialized groups and drives support for Institute-wide priorities such as the Initiative for Caltech Students, the Caltech Parents Fund, and student-facing philanthropy initiatives such as the Senior Class Gift.
The Assistant Director will work with Caltech parents, students, faculty and staff, recent graduates, and other affinity groups to cultivate an interest in and engagement with special opportunities, and to create value through unrestricted support to the Institute. This role will be responsible for growing revenue within the Caltech Fund's wide variety of high-level donors, identifying opportunities and strategies to create a comprehensive donor experience for affinity-based supporters of the Caltech Fund. The Assistant Director will also be a crucial liaison to the Caltech Fund's partners in AAR and across campus, working with partners to create meaningful experiences and opportunities for donors and generate momentum and support for emerging Institute priorities.
Essential Job Duties
Manage a portfolio of affinity and campaign-based donors, including but not limited to Caltech parents, students, faculty and staff, and recent graduates
Create support for and identify donors to Institute-wide priorities, such as the Initiative for Caltech Students
Set, track, and stay accountable to individual fundraising goals
Responsible for affinity group engagement and giving, from prospect identification to stewardship
Work seamlessly with the Caltech Fund integrated marketing and annual giving team to create affinity-focused experiences, content, and communication to cultivate a virtuous cycle of engagement
Develop relationships across AAR and the Caltech campus to drive participation and engagement around Commencement, alumni weekend, and other major academic milestones and events
Engage with new technologies and methods of communication to cultivate and engage donors, parents, alumni, and students - including but not limited to text messaging, social media, phone calls, and personal emails
Foster relationships with affinity-based campus leaders, driving volunteer activity and event participation
Manage the annual Senior Class Gift campaign, including working with the VP for Student Experience and student leaders on campus
Grow engagement with student philanthropy and events, participating in or leading campus events related to giving days, student-led giving campaigns, and class-based gifts
Perform other related duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree, or equivalent years of experience
2 or more years of experience in an annual giving, fundraising, or sales development team, especially within the higher education industry
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook and PowerPoint
Self-motivated and highly entrepreneurial, able to manage your own schedule, deadlines, and goals
Strong organizational and time management skills are crucial
Enthusiasm, passion, and curiosity about higher education development and nonprofit fundraising
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as a development officer or front line fundraiser, especially within an annual giving team
Experience with mail merge processes or other advanced Microsoft Outlook communications tools and features
Experience with printed communications materials, such as direct mail and brochures
Experience with event management and volunteer coordination
