A new Institute on Race - The Institute is designed to produce knowledge for bold solutions to realize racial justice and understanding. Drawing on expertise from across the University's schools and departments, and in partnership with external partners, the Institute will be a global center of gravity. It will provide opportunities for a community of scholars and thought leaders, including government agencies, nonprofits, and corporations, to collaborate to move us closer to a just society. The Institute will also be a leader in developing and disseminating basic and solutions-oriented research and insights. Core activities of the institute include:
Infrastructure, including financial support, a welcoming and functional space, and personnel to advance the core work required to develop knowledge and solutions that contribute to racial justice;
Robust support for collaborations with external partners to identify, design, and implement solutions-focused research in domains demanding urgent attention;
Activities focused on driving pragmatic solutions designed to produce racial justice;
Programming to engage the public, academics, and policymakers.
Position Summary
A new institute on the study of race seeks an experienced leader of proven effectiveness to serve as Executive Director of the Institute. Working under the direction of the institute faculty Directors, the Executive Director has oversight responsibility for coordinating the organization's research, education, policy, partnerships, and administrative programs and activities, and plays a key role in helping to set strategy and ensuring execution to achieve the Institute's mission. In this leadership capacity, the Executive Director will work closely and have considerable interaction and engagement with key stakeholders, including researchers in academia and industry, leaders in business and civil society, and local, national, and international government officials. The role offers the opportunity to play a key role in advancing the understanding of the impact that race has on society and fashioning solutions that advance racial justice. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated considerable experience leading multi-faceted organizations, keen interest in the Institute's mission, and a history of effective engagement with the aforementioned stakeholder groups.
Working with faculty and staff leadership from across the University, the Executive Director will lead a staff charged with translating a vision for racial justice into programs and activities that entail a variety of partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. The Executive Director will ensure effective coordination and execution of these activities, working closely with a team of direct reports that manage administration and operations, communication and marketing, educational programs, external partnerships, and research.

CORE DUTIES:
Provide leadership direction to assigned staff in the program area and oversee staff with program responsibility.
Work with Institute Directors and Operations Manager to identify, recruit, and onboard staff.
Promote a positive, collaborative, equitable, and supportive culture within the Institute
Design, develop, and oversee implementation of the most complex programs. Devise and implement vision, strategy, goals, and resource development in collaboration with faculty director. Assess entity/program efficacy. Shape development of a range of programs, including research and outreach. Provide guidance to program staff.
Support the development of new programs and initiatives to advance the mission and vision of the Institute, taking into account the resources and comparative advantages of the Institute and University, and oversee the implementation of such programs and initiatives through associated staff and faculty.
Stay sufficiently abreast of the latest technical and policy advances and efforts to connect those developments to opportunities for Institute.
Define the overall activities of core program(s), allocate appropriate staffing and other resources to achieve objectives. Develop and direct related policy. Provide strategic and financial advice to faculty director and/or senior management. Coordinate grant proposal submissions.
Champion major initiatives and lead complex, high-visibility process design and innovation projects; develop and implement initiatives.
Set the direction of the Institute's internal policy development for programs and administrative operations. Negotiate and influence on issues of university-wide impact. Serve as senior advisor and thought partner to Institute Co-Directors on programmatic and policy development.
Independently initiate and create strategic plans of considerable complexity and scope for the Institute. Propose and manage the implementation of complex and significant programmatic changes that may impact the Institute's academic and research capabilities. Consult and advise senior leadership. Oversee allocation of all resources
Develop, maintain, and control the financial budget related to program(s); shape financial strategy and long-range financial planning.
Responsible for the Institute's financial viability and success. Develop and deliver complex, comprehensive financial analysis, high-level strategic modeling both short- and long-term and provide advice on senior leadership decisions. Oversee the management of the consolidated annual budget plan. Responsible for committing Institute resources with limited review by senior officers.
Guide Institute staff through complex finance, operations, facilities, and human resources issues
Serve as an advocate for the Institutewith audiences external and internal to the University
Serve as a representative of the Institute to a range of audiences including but not limited to University personnel, government officials, civil society leaders, and academic experts.
Assist in fundraising efforts targeting individuals, corporations, foundations, and governmental agencies
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Advanced degree or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. Typically, five or more years of relevant experience in area of specialization and five or more years relevant experience managing staff. Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans, program partnerships and funding sources. Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience highly desired.
