The Minnesota Rural Electric Association (MREA), representing electric cooperatives in Minnesota (www.mrea.org ), is seeking qualified applications for the position of Communication Specialist. This position reports directly to MREA’s Director of Communications and is based in MREA’s Maple Grove location. The position, guided by the communications strategy, helps to build, manage, and execute MREA’s communication and media relations program.
MREA fosters unity among and provides service and leadership to all of Minnesota’s 50 locally owned, nonprofit electric cooperative utilities.
The Communication Specialist will:
Build and implement an organizational communication plan that aligns with and supports MREA’s goals and strategic direction, with strategic direction and support from the director of communications
Contribute to story-sharing as a means of impacting public/media relations
Research, develop and write in-depth content for internal and external stakeholders by gaining a thorough understanding of relevant industry issues
In collaboration with other staff, manage MREA’s digital and social media platforms
Manage website and social media content and analysis
Assist the director of communication with managing MREA’s media relations activities
Support the director of communications to develop, manage and implement a style guide and crisis management plan
Promotes MREA culture by actively participating in association events and activities
The successful candidate will have significant experience communicating across multiple platforms, including newsletters, blogs, press releases, social media and websites. Website expertise a plus with direct experience using WordPress, HTML and CSS preferred. Knowledge is typically acquired through a bachelor’s degree in communications or related fields and at least 3 years of experience in related job functions.
Familiarity with member-owned cooperatives and electric utility industry, or experience in legislative communication is preferred.
Normal office conditions with occasional work outside normal business hours when required to attend meetings and/or interact with various groups. Occasional travel required, including overnight stays.
