The School of Professional Studies (SPS) at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time position at the level of Associate Professor of Professional Practice or Professor of Professional Practice to teach in the MS program in Nonprofit Management.  The program includes three full time faculty and more than 30 adjuncts.  It draws a diverse group of students and is offered online and in person.  The degree prepares graduates for leadership roles within mission-driven organizations in a wide variety of contexts, including philanthropic foundations and global and community nonprofits.

This position will begin on July 1, 2023.  This is a full-time appointment with a multi-year renewal contingent on successful review.

The successful candidate will teach two courses in both the fall and spring semesters (i.e., a 2:2 course load) related to nonprofit management in one or more of the following areas: 

• Nonprofit management, including touching on overarching themes around vision, strategy, financial management, and people management.

• Nonprofit fundraising, including grant writing, soliciting donations from philanthropies and government, earned income streams and other sustainable and scalable business models

• Innovation in the nonprofit sector, including social entrepreneurship, public-private partnerships, impact investing and new funding models

• Evaluation and data-driven approaches to improving nonprofit and philanthropic practice, including performance measurement, impact measurement and scaling impact

The ideal candidate will have a background both as a practitioner and scholar and exhibit a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the classroom and professional practice. Candidates should hold a terminal degree or have extensive professional experience in nonprofit leadership, nonprofit management, public administration, philanthropy or fundraising.  Candidates with managerial experience in higher education programs should include descriptions of such experience in their application.  Candidates should also exhibit a commitment and history of excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design, and professional practice and/or scholarship.  

All applicants must have a BA/BS.  A terminal degree is strongly preferred. 

Candidates at the rank of Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have substantial experience and accomplishments, a superlative record of teaching, and documented evidence of excellence scholarship or exemplary success running a nonprofit.

Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have teaching experience, documented evidence of excellence in their field, and evidence of professional growth and activity in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector.
