As part of University Advancement and with focus on specific Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), the Associate Director of Development (ADoD) is responsible for the development of a comprehensive program which engages prominent national and regional companies and foundations, industry partners, and community organizations, resulting in increased financial support and visibility for the University. The ADoD will also facilitate relationships with local and state government agencies, nonprofits, and other entities that may contribute to Bucknell's efforts to secure external funding. The ADoD will work closely with Strategic Philanthropy Team partners, administration, faculty, and center/program staff to help identify, solicit, and steward institutional prospects including the preparation of foundation, corporate, and government grant proposals.
This position reports to the Director of Development, Strategic Philanthropy Programs, Education, and CFR and is part of the senior leadership team in Strategic Philanthropy. This position may be considered for a remote or hybrid work arrangement. If approved to work remotely, this position will return to campus at least once a month to meet with faculty, staff, and Strategic Philanthropy partners.
Job Duties:
- Identify prospective foundation, corporate, and government sources of support, with interests that are consistent with the University's strategic priorities and program areas, and work collaboratively with Bucknell leadership in cultivating and soliciting such funders through visits and written communication.
- Oversee the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and steward grant proposals and reports to foundation, corporate, and government sources in collaboration with advancement, finance, and the Office of Sponsored Projects.
- Provide overall coordination of the University's corporate and foundation relationships, managing relevant information, communication and feedback to faculty, administration and program colleagues as appropriate.
- Consult with, guide, and support faculty to develop and shape ideas into competitive proposals. Leverage faculty and staff relationships with funders and community groups to maximize funding opportunities and grow external partnerships.
- Work with Strategic Philanthropy team partners, administration, faculty, and academic center leadership to engage community partners in developing collaborative projects and programs for external funding support and/or student internship or research experience.
- Develop relationships locally and regionally with strategically important community organizations to help identify and pursue funding.
- Collaborate with the staff in the Center for Career Advancement to broaden existing relationships with corporate partners and alumni who recruit new employees from among Bucknell graduates and who utilize the services of the Center for internships.
- Work with academic center directors, administration within the Freeman College of Management, and the College of Engineering industry liaison to increase gifts and grants from existing funding sources and help identify new sources of support, including sponsorships.
- Meet occasionally with the Senior Executive Director, Business Services to coordinate activity related to procurement, contract management, and community relations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for local and state government agency staff and elected officials, and represent the University's interests to local and state government when necessary.
- Position may maintain a small portfolio of leadership gift prospects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible fundraising, advancement, or closely related experience
- Prior experience working with foundations, corporations, and/or government entities
- Demonstrated ability to use metrics to drive performance
- Demonstrated experience working with institutional senior leadership
- Superior written and oral communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to articulate a compelling case for philanthropic support programs
- Demonstrated practical application and experience with technology such as database functions/reports, MS Office products, G-Suite, etc.
- Valid U.S. driver's license
Other Requirements:
This position requires occasional evening and weekend work to support UA's events including blocks of time for major events such as Family Weekend, Reunion, Scholarship Day, and Homecoming, and other event support as required. Exceptions require supervisory approval. Also required is a commitment to attend, participate, facilitate or lead on-campus and off-campus events/activities outside of normal business hours as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Comprehensive campaign experience
- Demonstrated experience working with large foundations
- Knowledge of higher ed fundraising and the mechanics of university business
- Working knowledge in the field of gift planning of complex assets, gift vehicles offered by the University, federal and state tax considerations surrounding charitable giving, and the financial considerations involved in administering planned gifts
