POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Accounting Manager, the Accountant I applies principles of accounting to analyze financial information, interprets new and existing federal and state, regulations; performs complex professional and technical accounting functions for the Auxiliaries; reconciles accounting records, meets required deadlines, creates financial reports to meet operational needs; provides consultative services to supervisors in resolving accounting problems and other financial duties as listed. This position is a professional accountant performing a full range of accounting skills while applying policies, procedures, governmental accounting standards and generally accepted accounting principles and practices to auxiliary financial activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Reconcile and analyze general ledger accounts within appropriate guidelines. Apply problem solving skills and implement resolutions including process improvements and general ledger corrections. Recommend policy and procedural changes with generally accepted accounting standards, GASB regulations, and tax rules. 2. Participate in monthly and year-end accounting close processes, including journal preparation and entry, analysis, evaluation and interpretation of financial data. Communicate with other departments as required to obtain needed information. Analyze complex accounting processes involving multiple feeder systems and provide recommendations for problem solving as appropriate. Prepare year-end journal entries and audit work papers. 3. Monitor and review various fund transactions and balances. Follow up as necessary with departments and vendors to resolve issues. 4. Cross train and 'back-up' other Accountants. 5. Assist with the preparation and analysis of financial statements throughout the year for the Auxiliary organizations. 6. Assist with interim and end of year audits by preparing audit schedules and working closely with auditors. 7. Manage and record investment activity and provide reports as requested for the Auxiliaries. 8. Performs cost and budget transfers as directed or needed in accordance with policy. Monitors expenditures for allowability and fund availability. 9. Interprets accounting reports for departments or answers questions in regards to balances and general ledger transactions. 10. Perform additional and increasingly challenging tasks as assigned.
OTHER FUNCTIONS: Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the accounting department. Assists in other areas of Corporation Accounting as needed. Performs other duties or special assignments as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices, office methods and procedures, statistical and arithmetic presentation of data. Proficiency in Windows-based office suite applications. Working knowledge of governmental and/or non-profit accounting methods and related laws, rules and regulations. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to compose correspondence that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to apply accounting principles to the analysis of complex accounting problems. Ability to interpret accounting data and prepare clear, accurate financial statements and reports. Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques in finding solutions to complex accounting problems. Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work collaboratively with University and auxiliaries' staff, faculty, students, and external constituent groups.
Minimum Qualifications Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university AND one year of related experience in professional accounting work OR a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Specialized Skills Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Knowledge of internal control standards and the application thereof. Experience with personal computers including word processing, spreadsheet (MS Excel), virtual document management and applications, databases, querying software and e-mail software. Demonstrated experience that clearly provides evidence of the knowledge and skills required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements identified above are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Preferred Qualifications Experience in an non-profit, educational or governmental environment is preferred. Familiarity with Government Accounting Standards is desirable. Experience with automated accounting systems, e.g., PeopleSoft Finance and experience with query tools. Possesses strong time management skills and ability to set/adjust priorities in a deadline-oriented environment. Candidates should be self-motivated, driven and focused on continuous learning and improvement. Ability to effectively communicate information both verbally and in writing, in a clear, concise and professional manner.

The hiring range for this position is $25-$31 per hour, in accordance with Corporation salary guidelines.
