POSITION SUMMARY: An ideal candidate for the Science Writer and Communications Specialist position possesses the ability to compose and edit content fordiverse audiences, weave in strategic approaches to managing various social media accounts, and lead a project from inception tocompletion. This individual will report to and work directly with the Deputy Director of Communications at the Wu Tsai HumanPerformance Alliance.
CORE DUTIES: * Develop and research ideas for written publication/communication. Research will include reviews of scientific and technicalpublications and interviews with leading researchers across Stanford University and the other institutions that form the Wu TsaiHuman Performance Alliance. Key topic areas include regenerative rehabilitation, molecular and genetic pathways of humanperformance, computational modeling and prediction, wearable sensors, female athlete performance, exercise physiology,nutrition, and circadian rhythms. * Consult with internal and external customers to understand the need and purpose of a project. * Compose written material for diverse audiences, across a variety of channels. Materials include news releases, website content,newsletter content, fact sheets, scripts for digital products, announcements and updates for programmatic opportunities, andpitches for media. * Manage production of own publications/communications and adhere to deadlines. * Develop, compile and edit supplemental materials that support written communication (i.e., backgrounders, biographies,executive talking points, and other related materials). * Establish and maintain extensive contacts with key sources (media, news services, community organizations and other targeted audiences) to identify story themes and newsworthy events to promote and disseminate information. * Maintain department style standards.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree and five years of related experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Proven success in writing for publication in print, web, and other platforms * Excellent writing, interpersonal, and oral communication skills with proven ability to present, write, edit, and organize thoughtsin a clear, concise, and well-organized manner * Ability to understand materials of moderate complexity and synthesize across multiple sources to produce materials for diverseaudiences * Ability to change voice and writing style to fit a particular audience and purpose * Firm understanding of web technologies and applications, including social networking, social media tools, and currentcommunication trends * Excellent interpersonal skills and able to interact effectively with a diverse array of people, including senior leaders * Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite * Ability to manage and prioritize multiple deadlines * Excellent time management skills * Organized and strong attention to detail
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS: * Master's degree in science communications, journalism, and/or advanced degree in the life sciences or engineering preferred * Communications experience in a nonprofit, national laboratory, or other research institution, including academia or industry
