The Policy Content Manager is an experienced leader with a broad communications and public relations background. The manager reports to and works closely with the Senior Director of Strategic Communications to advance the mission and reputation of Raise Your Hand Texas in fulfillment of the organization’s strategic priorities across policy, advocacy, and legislative engagement.
The Policy Content Manager will effectively and efficiently develop and manage the timely production of written, visual and audio content for various audiences that supports strategic priorities and campaigns. This role will also maintain Raise Your Hand’s position as a respected and authoritative resource on public education policy issues by collaborating on and implementing media relations, public relations, marketing, and social media initiatives, as directed. In addition to the Raise Your Hand communications team, the policy content manager will also work closely with the organization’s marketing and storytelling team to develop top-quality content, including print materials, videos, podcasts, and web content.
Creating or facilitating creation of policy campaign content and other communications materials for key stakeholder audiences, including education policymakers, policy influencers, the media, and civic/community advocates
Developing and editing compelling, research-based content for multiple platforms including public policy papers, issue briefs, one-pagers, blog posts, videos, podcast episodes, newsletters, posters, fliers, letters, presentations, website copy, email marketing copy, fact sheets, talking points, social media content, and other policy content
Attending internal and external meetings and trainings to stay abreast of the latest policy developments, political issues, and research related to the organization’s policy priorities
Ensuring that all communications and related activities exemplify a clarity of commitment toward equity and diversity
Forging meaningful and ongoing relationships with the press and other stakeholders, and serving as a media contact, when needed
Working closely with the Public Relations Manager to develop and coordinate statewide media outreach in key markets and with members of the Texas capitol press corps to advance strategic policy, advocacy, and organizational objectives
Monitoring mentions of Raise Your Hand Texas and articles related to our key issues in the media and on social media
Monitoring and analyzing the performance of key performance indicators (KPIs) to offer suggestions for improvement
Using search engine optimization (SEO) strategies when writing and concepting web pages to maximize the online visibility of a website in search result
Skills Needed to be successful:
Experience implementing large-scale integrated communications campaigns, brand awareness, and media strategy with a relevant portfolio of proven outcomes
Sophisticated utilization of social media, web, digital, print, and multimedia strategies in support of organizational mission, values, and priorities
Exceptional project manager, writer and editor skills; excels at distilling complex education policy issues for public audiences
Strong proficiency with social media platforms and related impact metrics
Commitment to working long hours as needed during the legislative session to maximize the organization's outward-facing presence
Familiarity with the Texas political and public education policy landscape
Exceptional writing, editing, and oral communication skills and proficiency in communicating and engaging effectively with a wide range of constituencies
Expertise communicating with the media and key stakeholders, including in a crisis or controversial situation
Managing complex projects in a fast-paced organization with multiple stakeholders and competing audiences
Ability to manage multiple relationships and expectations across departments and partnerships
Experience with media database and monitoring platforms; email marketing software; and, creating/maintaining editorial calendars
Experience with the PESO Communications Model and AP Style
A Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing or journalism
Minimum of eight years full-time experience in public relations, public affairs or strategic communications
At least three years of experience leading internal or external communications efforts
Experience in strategic communications for education associations, non-profits, or advocacy organizations
Ability to recognize, value, and include different perspectives, experiences, approaches, and cultures in achieving organizational goals
A genuine understanding and appreciation of the importance of Texas public schools
