The Department of Strategic Communications (StratComm), in the Office of the President, is Cal Poly Pomona’s central communications office responsible for driving clear, consistent and coordinated brand storytelling. StratComm’s team informs, engages and inspires internal and external audiences to join Cal Poly Pomona in transforming lives through student success. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Marketing and Brand Strategy, Counsel and Leadership:
Provide proactive marketing communications and branding strategic counsel and direction to StratComm and campus partners to ensure continued engagement and support of university constituents.
This involves developing and implementing marketing strategic plans, project managing, establishing key performance indicators and overseeing an integrated marketing communications approach to ensure success of the university and its initiatives.
Lead the effort to complete, execute and continually refine an effective and successful university integrated marketing communications strategy and brand strategy by overseeing the work of consultants and agencies and collaborating with StratComm colleagues and other partners.
In collaboration with StratComm’s Content Studio squad, develop and ensure adherence to a framework for brand storytelling, messaging and identity.
Collaborate and work closely with administrative leaders and communications partners to ensure CPP's brand and messages are consistently, accurately and effectively communicated to key audiences.
Team Leadership, Supervision and Administration:
As a member of StratComm’s leadership team, collaborate with other directors and the Chief Communications Officer to define and deliver on StratComm’s vision, mission, strategy, goals, operational practices and cultural norms.
Provide leadership, direction and supervision to the staff members of the Marketing squad within StratComm.
Establish annual goals and support achievement of them, establish and communicate job expectations and provide coaching to help meet them, conduct reviews and evaluations.
Manage contracted marketing consultants and service providers. Oversee all aspects of the Marketing squad, including financial and administrative.
Data-driven Decision Making:
Working collaboratively with the department and campus partners, establish goals and key performance indicators.
Develop a reporting framework, share results with campus partners, and make recommendations for next steps, efficiencies and improvements, and new opportunities.
In addition, present marketing campaign outcomes to foster buy-in on marketing and branding initiatives.
Develop research strategies for the university and its campus partners.
This involves identifying target audiences and new marketing opportunities through the use of existing student information, traditional research, outside data sources, and partnerships with third-party research entities.
Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum of 7 years professional experience in business, public sector, nonprofit and/or higher education setting that provides the requisite knowledge and abilities for this position, including appropriate supervisory and leadership experience
A proven-track record of organizational and management skills
Experience managing complex contracts with vendors
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including editing, proofreading, copywriting, making presentations to a variety of diverse audiences
Proven record of successful experience in marketing, including digital marketing, and development, execution and evaluation of integrated marketing strategies
Demonstrated success in branding initiatives and storytelling
Well-developed skills in effective market research that supports measurable outcomes
Demonstrated experience of making data-driven decisions with regards to marketing initiatives
Ability to interpret, explain and present complex information in a variety of ways and foster buy-in from diverse audiences
Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment
Discretion and demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters
Valid California Driver’s License.
Demonstrated expertise in the areas of marketing communications, branding, and digital marketing, including analytics and social media. Demonstrated knowledge of policy and procedure formulations and implementation, budgets, personnel management, and educational administration. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of website production. Ability to utilize organizational and decision-making skills to manage complex and diversified program areas. Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community civility and nondiscrimination. Ability to maintain a safe work environment. Follows all University policies, procedures and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
Experience working in a consumer or customer marketing context, such as within a B2C or B2B business
Experience working in a marketing communications agency serving business, public sector and/or non-profit clients
Experience working in education and/or higher education
Experience working with non-traditional student and/or youth populations
Familiarity with the policies and procedures of a unionized environment
Demonstrated commitment and impact in areas of social and/or environmental impact
Master’s degree in marketing or other related field is preferred
APPOINTMENT AND SALARY
Salary is competitive and includes a comprehensive benefits package. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a Management Personnel Plan Level II position with an attractive benefits package, which includes a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month, an excellent choice of medical, dental, and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance and retirement benefits.
