The Deputy Director, CTY On-Campus Programs, Curriculum and Student Life serves two critical leadership functions for CTY’s on campus programs. This position will advise the Senior Director (and serve in that role at times of the senior director’s absence) and will be responsible for designing and maintaining CTY’s content offering for in person programs (including non-academic programs). This position will require someone who can think strategically, while executing on the day to day work to realize their strategic vision. Additionally, the Deputy Director provides primary leadership of program development, especially the development of new programs and/or courses spanning multiple academic disciplines as well as non-academic programming/residential life.
CTY’s in-person programs operate at various sites across the United States and internationally. This role will also provide leadership to a team of in-person program managers in the holistic implementation and management of the programs on site including management, talent development, coaching and maintaining a positive morale.
The deputy director must be able to function independently and exercise sound judgement in handling complex problems. The deputy director reports to the Senior Director of CTY’s in-person programs. Evening and weekend hours are to be expected, especially when on-site programs are in operation.
Leadership (30% of time)
Assists the Senior Director in leading in-person program unit. Serves as the Senior Director of in-person programs in the absence of the Senior Director.
Leads the conceptualization and development of new in-person programs that meet the strategic goals of the organization.
Leads advancement of CTY’s antiracism goals in all aspects of programming and operations.
Serves as standing member of CTY-wide curriculum leadership committee.
Serves as standing member of CTY-wide academic integrity committee.
Has primary responsibility for leading the development, execution and continual review and improvement of academic and student life programming, ensuring that CTY delivers quality, innovative curriculum and instruction in its in-person programs.
CTY students are provided with inclusive, engaging experiences outside the classroom that foster community and positive peer connections
The academic and non-academic aspects of the in-person programs are coherent and support the overall goals of the program.
In-Person programs and curriculum are appropriately aligned with Online programs
Engages in proactive workforce planning to ensure staffing needs are identified with focus on ensuring optimized skills, talents and experiences are represented to the benefit of our students.
Serves as a strategic partner to CTY Talent Acquisition to assist in identifying hiring profiles that will support new program creation for in person program
Program Development (40% of time)
Leads academic and student life program development activities by core and matrixed staff in the in-person programs unit.
Supervises Program Manager for Student Life
Supervises program manager for new program development, who is responsible for:
Writing proposals to submit to CTY New Program Committee
Creating business plans for proposed new programs
Managing new programs in first year of implementation
Supervises program managers in major academic subject areas, who are responsible for:
regular review and refresh of existing courses in their subject area
development of new courses as part of the overall CTY curricular plan
production of curriculum guides and other instructional resources.
Develops and implements curriculum evaluation plan.
Engages in research on in-person programming in collaboration with the CTY Research Unit
Develops and implements instructional staff evaluations, in collaboration with CTY HR
Identifies successful courses and targets unsuccessful courses for modification or discontinuation.
Develops new course offerings based on strategic enrollment plan.
Assures that curriculum advances CTY’s antiracism goals and meets appropriate quality standards.
Oversees the continual review, evaluation, development and implementation of policies and procedures related to curriculum.
Develops and oversees implementation of student assessments, in collaboration with CTY’s Senior Director of Research and other members of the Strategic Leadership Team, to include training of instructors
Develops goals with measurable rubrics for both subject departments and individual team members
Builds staff and approaches that support the principles of social justice, equity and inclusion.
Recognizes and celebrate staff excellence, growth and achievement
Program Direction: On Site Experience (30% of time)
Responsible for supervising program managers in site management. Ensures that the program at each location for which assigned program managers are responsible run smoothly logistically and in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
Meets weekly with Program Managers throughout the year to track progress toward and accomplishment of planning milestones.
Coaches leadership skills. Ensures that site mangers effectively support their on-site leadership staff and that management of sites advance CTY’s antiracism goals.
Critically, supports for program managers on handling challenging situations with students, parents, and staff.
Serve on an on-call team with the Director and the Assistant Director, Administration, Operations and Student Life, to handle escalations of the more serious issues, working in consultation and coordination with appropriate CTY and University resources.

Master’s Degree in education, curriculum or related field required
At least 7 years recent direct experience within a K-12, higher education, government, non-profit or corporate setting. Minimum of 3 years progressively responsible experience in leadership/administration in an academic environment.
Additional education may be substituted for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Demonstrated success developing and administering new academic programs. Experience advising academic and non-academic programs for academically advanced students or course work in gifted education preferred.
Experience in a residential education setting strongly preferred (public or private boarding school or residential summer program).

Physical requirements for the job:
Ability to access and transmit information using a computer and do so for extended periods of time.
Operate a computer and office machinery.
Communicate regularly with internal and external audiences via phone, email, and platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom; must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
Work varied hours including weekends and evenings as determined with supervisor.
Ability to maneuver in an office and on-site environment including accessing files, materials, observing classes in session, and participating/presenting information in small and large group environments.
