The Society of American Foresters is looking for a Staff Accountant to join our team in our Washington, D.C. office. The Staff Accountant will report to the Director of Finance and Administration and is responsible for supporting the accounting, human resources, and administrative operations of SAF. The Staff Accountant will produce regular financial reports, maintaining an efficient and comprehensive system of financial records meeting not-for-profit accounting standards.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced association financial or accounting professional with strong organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills. They will have a basic understanding of financial management, HR processes, and administrative management.
Conduct month-end close, drawing information from our membership database, credit cards, A/P software, investment accounts, office expenses, etc.
Assist with bank account reconciliation
Reconciling reimbursable federal grant expenses and recognizing associated federal grant revenue in the accounting system
Assist with any lines of credit or debt schedules SAF pursues
Maintain financial schedules for pre-paid expense, fixed assets, and change in net assets
Pull monthly account statements
Generate monthly departmental statements, financial statements, and communicate the data to the Director of Finance and Administration
Preparing and entering journal entries such as payroll, fringe benefits, investments, etc.
Liaise with respective vendors
Provide timely monthly financial statements to Director of Finance and Administration for review
Manage the bill pay system, A/P, and annual 1099 generation
Troubleshoot A/P system as needed
Coordinate with staff to ensure bills are charged to the correct ledger accounts, refunds are processed, and bills are paid in a timely manner
Supports A/R by reviewing weekly deposits, creating non-member invoices, and reviewing PayPal activity
On an as needed basis, train staff on invoice creation, our refund process, and on the bill pay system
Support the annual budget development process, the annual audit, and the Form 990 development process
Process quarterly state and local dues
Ad hoc tasks and special projects, as needed
Administer all activities related to processing SAF’s payroll, including reporting, time keeping, wage garnishments ensuring accurate benefit rates and deductions
Add employee updates to personnel records such as address changes, deduction, or tax changes
Provide ADP reports to ensure accurate W2’s are generated, and sent notices out annually
Oversee office visit of IT provider twice a month
Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Finance and Administration

The salary of the Staff Accountant is $60,000 annually.

3+ years of overall professional experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance, Economics, or associated disciplines
Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Expertise in GAAP financial and accounting principles
Proficiency in journal entries
Proficient with spreadsheets and databases
Strong attention to detail, highly organized with excellent multi-tasking skills
Informed on nonprofit best practices, including applicable state and federal law
Knowledge of QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, and other financial operations products
Experience working with sensitive data and maintaining confidentiality of information, protecting PII data, and acting with integrity
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Self-starter comfortable with moderate supervision who is able to take initiative and accomplish tasks on time
A team player who is personable, adaptable, and has an excellent customer service ethic
Adept at developing and maintaining collaborative internal and external relationships
Ability to travel out of the DMV metro area (less than 5%) to events and conferences
Experience with a Content Management System a plus. iMIS CMS preferred
Knowledge and passion for forests and natural resources a plus
