ABOUT THE POSITION
The Director of Communications envisions and leads multi-channel communications campaigns for EL Education’s events and impact, inspiring diverse audiences to engage with EL Education’s mission. They are the organization’s public relations strategist and media voice. They report to the Senior Director of Communications and Marketing, and are a member of the Creative Team, which includes publications, marketing, communications, multi-media production and graphic design. The Director of Communications supervises the EL Education Communications Associate.
Design PR strategy to empower EL Education and to meet its goals and fulfill its mission
Build and nurture relationships with reporters and influencers
Lead relationships with PR consultants and software vendors
Pitch stories, write and publish press releases
Lead proactive crisis communications strategy
Support staff and ambassadors to engage with press
Guide the strategy on press outreach, including messaging in press releases, creation of press kits and materials, interview preparation, and responses to media requests.
Identify trends, monitor current events, policy and advocacy efforts and influencers (community leaders, artists, educators, policy makers
Communications Strategy and Campaign Leadership
Set goals and design communications strategies for campaigns such as the EL Education National Conference, Annual Report, National Better World Day, and results of research studies
Set goals and strategies for EL Education social media, newsletters, and blog
Write for blog and emails in partnership with the Communications Manager
Collaborate with EL Education teams to design and drive communications campaigns that meet their goals, such as celebrating new district partnerships or launching new curriculum products
Co-create key messages that are inspiring and affirming to diverse audiences
Create and execute a strategy that empowers the Board, team members at every level of the organization, educators, other key constituents to leverage communications resources, serve as ambassadors, and contribute to our movement for educational change
Develop and oversee systems and procedures necessary to support communications across the organization with the support of the Communications Associate
Empower the Communications Associate (CA) and Communications Manager (CM) to succeed in their roles and grow as professionals
Oversee and edit communications materials including donor and funder communications; speeches, articles, publications, website content, promotional messaging, and press releases and outreach materials; concept papers, briefing materials, internal memos, online content, annual reports, white papers, print and digital promotions.
Skills and Assets
Candidates must share a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism: both an appreciation for our organization’s aim to empower all students with access to educational opportunity and dedication to making our communications accessible and affirming to all
A minimum of four years working in PR or communications in a senior role, including experience with multi-channel communications strategies for social media, blogs, email, and earned media
Expertise with public relations is required: experience with Meltwater or Cision preferred, existing relationships with reporters highly valued
Significant knowledge of complex education policy and practice issues, and the ability to communicate them to diverse stakeholders, and knowledge of education media outlets, including print, broadcast, and digital
Knowledge of analytics and ability to use them to measure success and drive strategy
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Prior experience supervising and managing staff
Critical consciousness of issues of equity, structural racism, and personal privilege
Experience developing and implementing communications that are informed by in-depth analysis of issues of structural racism and inequality
Proven experience collaborating, inspiring a team, and managing projects across an organization soliciting input and organizing next steps with transparency and a shared understanding of goals
Ability to travel 10-20% of the time (once Covid Travel Restrictions are lifted)
