Responsible for performing standard and investigative laboratory work in support of scientific research by performing bench-level experiments, operating analytical instruments, recovering, compiling and verifying the accuracy of research data; performing calculations; preparing charts, graphs and summaries.
Works under the direction of the Principal Investigator or higher-level laboratory personnel. Uses limited discretion and judgment in carrying out experiments.
Perform experiments at the bench level to support investigative work
Prepare and maintain laboratory reagents, stocks, cultures and cell lines
Perform and modify documented protocols and assays
Maintain laboratory records and compile data on experiments and assays
Interpret and report on experimental results
Operate and carry out basic maintenance of laboratory equipment
Order and maintain appropriate levels of supplies
May supervise work-study students
BA/BS in a scientific field required
Research Techn I minimum qualifications- BA/BS in a scientific field required. Some lab experience outside of coursework and must have scientific knowledge in the area of study and basic laboratory skills. Independent research experience in addition to school lab experience is usually necessary
Research Techn II minimum qualifications- Intermediate level position requires a BA/BS and 2 years experience working in a laboratory. Independent research experience outside of laboratory course work is required
Some experience in these areas:
DNA and RNA library preparation for bulk and single-cell sequencing
qPCR and its assay design for various applications
Various patient sample processing and nucleic acid extraction techniques, including CLIA certification for select assays
Cell culture and sterile technique
REDCap data entry and curation for research and clinical applications
Analysis and visualization of data in R

Researchers are discovering new ways to detect cancers earlier, improve treatments, and learn how to prevent cancers from growing. Although Fred Hutchinson opened its doors in 1975, its history began about 20 years before that. In 1962 Fred Hutchinson envisioned a center devoted to studying cancer, a disease that took his brother’s life. Today Fred Hutchinson is contributing to the next waves of breakthrough treatments and prevention strategies. Fred Hutchinson collaborates with the Seattle Cancer Alliance, the National Cancer Institute, and the University of Washington.
