The Assistant Director of Middle & Early High School manages and oversees all aspects of programming from 7th grade to 10th grade. The Assistant Director serves on a small team and must work collaboratively with a strong sense of purpose and vision for expanding educational opportunities for youth who are underrepresented in higher education. The ideal candidate will hold essential characteristics for success, have a love for learning, sense of service, growth mindset and strong work ethic.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities include the following:
Oversees, designs, and plans all programmatic aspects from 7th-10th grade including school year tutoring, grade monitoring, parent engagement, enrichment activities, new student recruitment and summer program operations.
Manages and oversees organizational partnerships relevant to all 7th thru 10th grade programming (ex: Boys and Girls Club etc.) and ensures enrollment, attendance, and academic readiness goals are met.
Manages programmatic aspects of Breakthrough SJC’s intensive summer program including but not limited to organizing facilities, curriculum, summer events, preparation of students and teachers, orientation week and wrap up week.
In collaboration with the Executive Director, manages the implementation of the five-year strategic plan specifically regarding the organizational priority to support students through college graduation.
Oversees the recruitment, hiring and management of middle school and high school tutors and leads tutoring program, including logistics and tutor management.
Recruits, selects, and orients incoming Breakthrough middle school students.
Assists Executive Director with recruitment, selection, and management of Breakthrough SJC Teaching Fellows, Instructional Coaches, and additional summer staff.
Provides training, coaching, feedback, professional support, and direction for all students, tutors, teaching fellows, and instructional coaches.
Builds and maintains positive relationships and communication with all stakeholders including students, staff, organizational partners, parents, school district, and the community.
Creates and supports the social-emotional needs of all students by providing a diverse community that upholds and celebrates the inherent dignity of every person including the importance of being anti-racist in nature.
Other duties as assigned.
Strong writing and public speaking skills are essential. Bilingual in Spanish is required.
The ability to work on multiple projects, adhere to deadlines, exercise good judgment, and collaborate in a team is essential. Experience managing others, leading, or “owning” a program and a demonstrated level of commitment to an organization or project are also imperative. Candidates must also possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with students, families, and educators, including cross-cultural sensitivity.
Must possess the ability to evaluate programming, staff, and students in a constructive manner to continually build a stronger program. The ability to be resourceful, detailed and solution-oriented in a timely fashion is imperative to success in this position.

As Breakthrough is an “out of school time program” candidates should anticipate regular works hours to be adjusted for portions of the month, during our summer program, and occasional weekends.

Educational and/or Experience:
Must have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in education or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.
Experience working with middle school or high school students from underrepresented communities.
Knowledge of curriculum and program development, youth development, tutoring or teaching preferred.
Ability to work in an environment and communities with people from diverse backgrounds (ethnic, socio-economic, educational, etc.)
An understanding of educational equity, a firm belief that education can end poverty in a family line forever, and the ability to work effectively with a variety of constituencies.
Experience in community engagement, and communications is highly preferred.
Experience with a Breakthrough Collaborative program, or youth-serving organization or another nonprofit program is highly preferred.
Spanish skills are required for this position.
