We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Director and General Counsel on our AMA Insurance team. As the Director and General Counsel you will serve as a member of AMA Insurance Agency leadership team and be responsible for rendering legal advice, counsel and assistance to management, staff and Board of Directors. You will also ensure that AMA Insurance Agency, Inc. complies with insurance statutes and regulations and other applicable statutes and regulations and meets corporate legal requirements.
Ensures that AMA Insurance Agency, Inc. complies with the corporate legal and insurance regulatory requirements in all 50 U.S. States, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands (“jurisdictions”).
Oversees licensing and appointment of AMA Insurance Agency, Inc. and individual producers in all jurisdictions.
Negotiates, reviews, and drafts legal agreements, including tripartite agreements, that promote and protect the business interests of AMA Insurance Agency, Inc.
Provides general legal counsel to management and staff to enable them to achieve business goals.
Oversees the management of corporate risk, including annual negotiation of error and omission coverage.
Initiates and maintains preventative legal processes for the Company and monitors performance of each.
Oversees litigation and investigation of charges/complaints against the Company.
Coordinates human resource and other corporate administrative policy changes.
Serves as Privacy and Security Officer of AMA Insurance Agency, Inc. Ensures compliance with HIPAA, New York Cybersecurity Law, and other state privacy laws. Manages the investigation of potential security incidents. Coordinates required actions with insurance carriers on investigations and compliance pertaining to privacy and security.
Oversees review and approval of and/or reviews and approves promotional materials, including materials for AMA-Sponsored programs. Secures copyright(s) for material(s) as appropriate.
Serves as Corporate Secretary for AMA Insurance Agency, Inc. and performs duties prescribed by law.
Aids management in the development of new insurance and related products to be marketed to both member and nonmember physicians and assists in the development of the nonmember market for such products. Aids insurance carriers and service providers in developing new products and developing enhancements or making clarifications to existing products.
Engages and coordinates the activities of outside legal counsel as necessary.
Completes other tasks and projects as assigned by President, Group Vice President and General Manager and/or Board of Directors.
Manages annual Legal Department budget
Lead, mentor and provide management oversight for professional staff
Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating performance and developing/mentoring staff
May include other responsibilities as assigned.

Licensed to practice law in Illinois
Minimum 10- 15 years of relevant experience; minimum of 5-8 years’ experience in a general counsel position required; experience as general counsel of an insurance agency or insurance company strongly preferred
In-depth knowledge of life and health insurance regulatory requirements, including mass-marketing and digital compliance matters relating to both insurance producers and insurance companies required
Knowledge of property and casualty insurance regulatory requirements preferred
Experience drafting agreements required
Outstanding analytical and critical thinking skills with a focus on practical outcomes
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with an ability to persuade and communicate confidently
Superior interpersonal skills including demonstrated ability to interact well with clients to gain their respect and confidence to build a trusting relationship
Demonstrated experience in thinking creatively and where applicable the ability to present multiple solutions with varying degrees of risk to a given legal problem and to succinctly explain each solution and the corresponding risk mitigation the solution provides
