The Institute on Inequalities in Global Health (IIGH) in the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences is looking for a detail-oriented and organized Public Communications Coordinator to join the team at the University of Southern California.
At the USC Institute on Inequalities in Global Health, we tackle existing and emerging global health concerns by bringing together the many academic disciplines needed to address them. We work with partners at USC and around the world to address health-related disparities and inequalities, taking a multidisciplinary approach to advance the evidence base about what works, train the next generation of leaders and inform public policy.
The Public Communications Coordinator will: (1) develop and manage all Institute communications and marketing materials, (i.e., website, social media, newsletters, events, etc.); (2) create and update digital and printed assets and media products, ensuring language consistent with Institute goals and culture; and (3) work with faculty and staff to ensure event success, and develop and maintain the schedule of communications-related activities.
This position will be an integral part of the IIGH team and will collaborate in the development of an overall communications strategy and editorial calendar, as well as tracking and analyzing metrics.
Communications and Event Promotion & Coordination in consultation with senior IIGH staff
Develops new, engaging content for the Instituteâs website and social media accounts â including creating and editing photos and video â that effectively translates and tells the story of the Institute. Reviews content periodically to ensure accuracy.
Manages Instituteâs website, social media channels, and listservs, and coordinates content creation and dissemination.
Social media content calendar management using Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc., working with Institute faculty and staff to prioritize and optimize distribution.
Administers online events on Zoom and live streams like Facebook Live (Live video).
Determines and selects stories within the Institute to promote externally. Determines best ways to tell stories and identifies appropriate students, faculty and/or staff to include.
Develops audience-specific marketing materials such as reports, event and program announcements, publications, official correspondence, e-newsletters, articles, blogs, brochures, course advertising, presentations, etc., as needed or assigned.
Maintains continuity and consistency of online and printed content and provides support in defining communications procedures.
Manages media files created by Institute staff and coordinates Institute communications and event equipment (filming, editing videos, overseeing interviews with guest speakers, and setting up cameras, mics, etc.). Â Â Â Â Â Â
Assists in the planning and execution of Institute-sponsored events (in person and online).
Develops marketing strategies to promote the Institute and its activities, as well as strategies for cultivating and maintaining effective working relationships with partners and counterparts in the print and digital media.
Works closely with Institute faculty and staff to identify priorities for media outreach and strategy. Organizes and monitors media pushes that align with Institute priorities and strategic initiatives.
Collaborates with IIGH research staff to develop, write, and produce research-based materials, such as op-eds, news articles, press releases, and data visualizations.Â
Develops dissemination strategy for research and education products, including suggested media and policy outreach.
Coordinates promotion with other university departments, as appropriate.
Bachelorâs degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Two yearsâ experience in communications preferred.
Proficiency in AP-style writing and editing.
Proficiency in WordPress.
Exceptional written and verbal communications skills with demonstrated knowledge of content management and delivery of creative content (copy, image, and video).
Understanding of target audience identification and dissemination plans.
Well-organized, detail oriented with exceptional multitasking capabilities and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations, including senior administration, faculty, staff, and student audiences.
Experience developing, maintaining and growing social media presence for an organization.
Experience developing and managing listservs and working on dissemination efforts for an organization.
Demonstrated experience in website management.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, Canva, Mailchimp, Microsoft Office.
Comfortable working with Mac and PC Operating Systems.
Experience creating and editing photography, videography, and other digital content.
The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks and communicating the status of these tasks. Prior experience managing communications campaigns and initiatives for a college/university, nonprofit or government agency preferred.
