Position Summary
The Associate Director for the Race and Opportunity Lab is responsible for directing the Lab's projects via effective project management, budget and operational oversight, and supervision of the team. The Associate Director is responsible for ensuring the Lab's community science projects are completed on time, within budget, and on task. It has overall responsibility for the execution of key tasks to advance the work of the HomeGrown StL and its strategic priorities.
The position will serve as a liaison and connector, working closely with community-based organizations, to cultivate relationships and manage opportunities for strategic, sustainable and equitable community engagement. This includes administrators in nonprofit organizations, leaders from academia, community leaders, media, and local governments.
Job Description
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management and Leadership
- Design and implement appropriate organizational structures and processes that facilitate the effective and efficient work of the Lab. Collaborate with the Principal Director to provide strategic direction and contributes to strategic planning for all Lab research and community science projects.
- Develop and implement the Lab's strategic and operational priorities as related to three primary priorities: 1) to grow HomeGrown StL's individual and Preferred Provider Network memberships and retention 2) scaling the HomeGrown StL Life Coaches in a regional Intensive & Relentless Outreach Corp (e.g., recruitment, training, professional development and management systems) 3) and to advance community science to improve black male economic mobility.
- Provide oversight and coordination to ensure a high degree of communication among internal and external partners in order to ensure faithful execution of contracts, agreements and planned activities as well as identify and resolve problems.
- Serve as the primary contact on operational matters for the team, collaborators/investigators, university departments, external partners and funders.
- Manage hiring processes and oversee human resource matters in coordination with Brown School and university human resources policies and personnel.
- Supervise administrative and operational staff as necessary in areas such as communication, finance, and event planning, editing and donor relations.
- Provide training and support in the use of project management tools and sets expectations for use of these tools.
- Lead financial planning and budgeting activities, as well as provide financial management oversight.
- Lead the planning and oversee implementation of an external communications strategy including events, website, newsletters, and social media.
- Incorporate the best practice methods in all development and planning, and effectively leverages and deploys Washington University and regional resources to accomplish Lab's goals.
- Represent the Lab and HomeGrown StL mission/movement to internal and external stakeholders with a focus on building new partnerships, enhancing community relations, and nurturing existing formal and informal relationships.
- Oversee efforts to identify and implement new operational strategies and tactics to increase efficiency.
Operational Across Lab Projects
- Ensure consistent and accurate documentation of project activities and deliverables across all Lab projects.
- Ensure project teams are comprised of appropriate staffing levels and the expertise needed to be successful.
- Collaborate with the Brown School Office of Research Administration to establish streamlined and responsive proposal, contracting, reporting, and billing procedures.
- Oversee product development and quality assurance processes for Race and Opportunity Lab priority group, advisory group, and working group deliverables in collaboration with partners.
- Produce and manage resources to meet project and/or program development implementation objectives.
HomeGrown StL/Operational
- Provide leadership, direction, mentoring/coaching, and support to administrative team and project leaders of the Lab's core mission-delivery projects to ensure that any and every black boys and young men in the St. Louis city and county can benefit from HomeGrown StL individual-level and Systems Change interventions.
- Preferred Provider Network.
- Intensive & Relentless Outreach Corp (Life Coaches)--Life Coaches (operational and governance), and service unit support and training.
- HomeGrown Membership Development - includes recruitment (retention) and placement of boys and Life Coaches.
- My Brothers Keepers Ambassadors.
- Community Science Portfolio- includes Equity and Social Mobility framework, all research pilots, program and data management.
- Manage HomeGrown StL governance committees, including but not limited to the National Advisory Board, Regional Steering Committee, and oversees all HomeGrown StL governance and community convenings
- Ensure professional and superior service is provided to HGStl member via all peer and professional HGStL Life Coaches, staff and community partners, through systems optimization, staff training, member feedback methods, handling complaints and celebrating stakeholder success.
- Specify and analyze data to understand black boys and young men trends, demographics, and social mobility data in order to retain and recruit boys and young men as HGStL Members.
- Share weekly data reports with Principal Director, National Advisory Board, Leadership team and other staff as needed.
- Ensure the HGSTL interventions are implemented with high adherence to the fidelity and adequate staff training, across all mission-delivery areas.
- Take responsibility for Lab and HGStL Policies that are governed by Regional Steering Committee approval.
- Ensure HomeGrown StL Life Coaches policies and procedures are implemented, and oversees plans that adequately recruit, place, train, supervise, support, evaluate and recognize volunteers.
- Manage knowledge sharing of Lab's Safety Activity Checkpoints to our teams, employed staff, Life Coaches, and families ensuring that all are informed and updated and confirms all our home visits risk management processes are aligned.
- Set strategic priorities; oversee HomeGrown StL work plans and approve revisions to work plans; track and report on progress.
Preferred Qualifications
- Terminal degree in social work, social sciences, or related field and five or more years related experience in community participatory research, curriculum development, community engagement, organizing, policy practice, government leadership, particularly in the St. Louis region.
- Strong grant proposal development, research process and funder relationship experience.
- Successfully engaged in strategic plan creation and implementation.
- Demonstrable leadership skills.
- Experience designing and directing complex work projects across multiple priorities.
- Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing and use appropriate technology to do so.
- Excellent analytical skills and aptitude for details.
- Experience in designing and optimizing organizational processes and process flow.
- Experience in managing teams through a period of organizational change, including technology implementation, departmental restructure and/or other organizational change.
- Effective collaborator.
- Ability to lead and inspire teams of diverse individuals, project teams, and stakeholders to meet shared goals.
- Deep understanding of motivating, mobilizing and supporting volunteers, as well as evaluating volunteer systems and policies to increase effectiveness.

- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to remain positive, adapt and even thrive when unexpected circumstances arise.
- Experience in grants and proposal management.
- Experience in utilizing a Customer Relationship Management System (CRM), such as Salesforce.
- Ability to analyze data and information, and adapt work plans and strategies based on analyses.

Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or equivalent combination of training & experience with focus in business, operations management, or non-profit administration.
- Three years of related experience, with previous project management experience, including budget responsibility and recruiting, training, and supervising staff.
- Prior research experience in a field related to social work, public health or social policy.
- Strong experience in planning and facilitating a variety of public events and private meetings, ideally with formal training in adult learning, event development, and public/media presentations.
- This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills.

Salary Range
$68,200.00 - $116,600.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
