The University of California's only school of international affairs, the School of Global Policy & Strategy (GPS) provides a unique resource for training leaders, creating ideas, and building networks for the governance of globalization and its local impacts. GPS is internationally renowned for its innovative programs, superb faculty and outstanding students and now stands among the world's top graduate schools of international relations and is the established leader in its focus on Asia and the Americas. GPS instructs a diverse student body consisting of 60% domestic and 40% international students in MPP, MCEPA, MIA, BA-MIA, MAS, joint PhD with Department of Political Science and executive education programs. GPS also administers the International Studies Program, a fast-growing interdisciplinary program with over 1700 declared undergraduate majors, that offers a rigorous curriculum for undergraduate students interested in international affairs.
Offering nine B.A. degree options, three combined BA/MIA programs, and a minor program, the International Studies Program explores the interaction between the international and national, global and local, contemporary and historical ideas shaping globalization. The Career Consultant works collaboratively with the Director of Career Services to create and deliver a comprehensive career services program in support of the diverse needs of the multicultural, multidisciplinary group of GPS graduate students and alumni. The Career Consultant utilizes a theoretical understanding of career development to identify client population needs, identifies relevant information, implements and delivers programs and resources, and evaluates outcomes. The Career Consultant plans and conducts one-on-one individual counseling appointments and group advising / coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and improving internship, job search competencies as well as alumni career services. Responsible for guiding the students through a career management process addressing self-assessment, career exploration and development of an individualized marketing plan for an internship or job search process.
Leads employer relations and career coaching for the private sector. Maintains relationships with alumni, employers, representatives, and other organizations to establish contacts to meet the career needs of students. Serves as liaison between employers and alumni to deliver employer-involvement events, such as industry nights, networking events, and mock interviews.

BA or advanced degree in career counseling, education psychology, or related field, and four to six (4 - 6) years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
Broad occupational knowledge acquired through counseling accreditation program and/or professional experience, with an understanding of career development theory and issues, job search methodologies, as well as local, national and international employment trends.
Demonstrated ability to develop comprehensive curricula for workshops and courses aimed at facilitating career transitions and related soft-skill training.
Proven strong ability to build relationships and manage a complex, highly visible set of services for graduate students, alumni, donors, and corporate employers.
Proficient in a highly computerized environment (databases, electronic bulletin boards, e-mail, Microsoft Office and the Internet). Willing to use and leverage audio-visual technology.
Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to hiring practices. Demonstrated knowledge of private, nonprofit and public sector hiring practices.
