The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) seeks a Chess InstructorSupervisor who will focus on providing onboarding, mentoring, supervisory and other assistance to instructors of academically talented students enrolled in CTY online courses. This role will serve as a resource to provide feedback to online program leadership related to instructor quality and development as needed. Additionally, the Casual Instructor Supervisor will provide instructional support for students approximately 15% of the time. Instructor Supervisors will support CTY Online math courses.
The Chess Instructor Supervisor focuses on:
Online Instructor Staffing and Supervision, including Online Instructor Staffing and Supervision, including communication with parents, students, and schools (70%).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Help the 5 to 15 instructors assigned to you to feel engaged with CTY and their courses. Help instructors solve problems as they arise.
Work directly with primary course supervisor and assistant program manager to understand specific responsibilities related to supervising instructors, maintaining courses, and working with students, families, and schools.
Stay current on content of assigned courses.
Attend team meetings, professional development sessions, and other meetings as assigned.
Assist the primary course supervisor in the following area(s):
Staffing and enrollment support:
Help on-board and train new instructors and teaching assistants.
Make recommendations for improvements to new instructor training.
Check-in weekly with instructors.
Monitor instructors and teaching assistants to ensure timely completion of tasks. Review sample of instructor communications and provide feedback to instructor.
Field questions from instructors and teaching assistants and assist with the adherence to program-related policies and course instruction.
Provide feedback to primary course supervisors to assist in the completion of Instructor performance reviews.
Help arrange for substitute instructors as needed and adjust for changing enrollment numbers and/or teacher absences.
Send / review welcome letters for instructors and teaching assistants.
Send feedback or reminders to instructors and teaching assistants.
Assist in reviewing student placement tests.
Stay up-to-date on best practices for teaching online courses, software available for online instruction, and standards both in online instruction and content for courses supervised.
Review post-course survey results and share observations with instructors and unit leader.
Communicate with instructors, parents, students, and schools regarding course-related issues.
Review incomplete enrollments and discuss solutions with parents.
Instruct online students in session based and individually paced courses when needed
Address issues with Moodle or other technology, including identifying errors in the course, resetting of tests, and other issues as they arise.
Help with technical issues with Zoom, virtual desktop environment, and others.
Recommend changes and updates to course content and documentation to full-time course supervisors.
Assist program managers with implementation and rollout of any curriculum changes made.
Assist with ongoing continuous curriculum improvement projects, editing or rewriting lessons or assessments.
Assist in session preparation for new course sessions – renaming, updating dates, etc.
Testing of updated courses on test/production servers.
Additional duties may be required based on the need of the subject area/program including but not limited to:
Review class recordings and guide instructors and teaching assistants.
Assist in building staffing plan for sessions – review instructor and teaching assistant's availability, number of instructors needed, and assign instructors and teaching assistants.
Follow up reminders with instructors on midterm and final exam feedback and reviews.
Review gradebooks and enter grades as needed.
As needed, help plan, lead, staff, guide, and promote weekly help rooms and other live online sessions.
Coordinate with hiring team to recommend updates to recruiting and interviewing plans.
Coordinate the proctoring of tests with parents or schools.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in mathematics, math education, or related field with at least two years teaching or tutoring experience.
Master's degree is strongly preferred.
Additional (graduate) education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Special Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
At least two years teaching or tutorial experience in middle school or high school mathematics.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Two years' experience as a casual instructor for Center for Talented Youth.
Experience teaching advanced level chess courses.
Prior experience managing and supervising a virtual team of online instructors.
Experience teaching chess and/or cryptology to young students.
Experience working with online chess clubs or tournaments.
Degree of Independent Action Performed:
Large degree of independent action.
Internal/External Contacts Required:
Collaborative relationships with the Senior Program Manager, supervisors, and Online Programsadministrators and staff.
Frequent contact with students, schools, and parents via telephone, email, and web-based virtual meeting room software.
Knowledge of the Following Programs:
Moodle or similar learning management software, Microsoft Outlook and Office, Zoom or similar online conference software, Respondus or similar online proctoring software.
Computer/Other Special Needs:
Must provide own laptop or desktop computer with security configuration allowing use of JHU-CTY platforms. Chromebooks and devices owned by schools/other institutions are generally not sufficient.
Must have access to broadband internet.
Experience with Online education technologies, such as Moodle or similar Learning Management System, and Zoom or similar online video conference software.
Machines/Equipment Used on the Job and % of Time Used:
Ability to access and transmit information using a computer.
Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via email, telephone or Skype, and possibly face to face with internal and external audiences and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
Supervises 5 to 15 online instructors who are instructing up to 300 students total.
Will often require response to questions and support at times that are outside of a traditional work schedule including evenings and weekends.
