The Markey Lab is a newly established laboratory led by a physician-scientist and is seeking to recruit a post-doctoral fellow or a trainee hematologist/oncologist interested in pursuing laboratory-based research projects. The lab focuses on the intersection between the microbiome (and its metabolites) and post-transplant and/or post-immunotherapy immune function and clinical outcomes.
In this role, the candidate will be involved in projects that take clinical observational findings from studies of the intestinal microbiome (e.g. Markey et al, Blood 2020) through to mechanistic studies in mouse models. A number of observational studies have been performed supporting associations between the microbiome and transplant and/or immunotherapy outcome, but mechanistic data is currently lacking (e.g. Peled et al, NEJM 2020, Stein Thoeringer et al, Science 2020). Combining hypotheses generated from our clinical data with state of the art immunology techniques in mouse model systems is important for addressing the current knowledge gaps in the field and supporting the design of microbiome-targeted interventions in future.
A recent PhD, MD/PhD, or MD in a relevant biological field
Candidate is expected to have laboratory experience in mouse models, flow cytometry and sequencing methods
Excellent written and verbal communications skills are essential
Experience with microbiology and/or computational aspects of microbiome analysis would be an advantage
Experience in working with clinical samples would also be an advantage
