CSS seeks an Associate Counsel to work with our General Counsel and members of the CSS Legal Department on a wide and interesting variety of legal work to support and advance the mission of both the Department and of CSS itself. Under General Counsel’s direction, the Associate Counsel will:
Review and draft contracts, memoranda of understanding, letter agreements and project proposals for various CSS departments
Provide legal counsel and advice on a broad range of topics
Ensure compliance with tax exempt-related laws and regulations and other relevant legislation
Monitor funding-related contracts compliance for the Legal Department; draft and submit periodic grant reports and renewal applications; work with CSS Development Department to scout and apply for funding opportunities to support and expand the Legal Department’s work
Periodically review and assist with updating CSS agency-wide policies, as necessary
Conduct legal research and writing for the Department as assigned
Assist with Board of Trustee-related matters as necessary
Represent the Legal Department or General Counsel, as needed, at internal and external meetings
Help promote the Legal Department’s work through various media
Assist in long and short-term planning for the Department
Coordinate legal work with and for NDP: provide training to NDP senior volunteers and staff
Provide direct reentry-related legal services to individual clients
Perform other duties as assigned.
Law degree and admission to the New York State Bar or eligibility for waiver on motion
At least seven years’ post-admission legal experience, preferably including contracts compliance
Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently
Excellent writing and editing skills
Flexibility, and the ability to work on several potentially unrelated matters simultaneously
Prior in-house counsel or management-level legal services experience desired
Interest in advancing the objectives and work of CSS as a whole and of the Legal Department in particular
Previous reentry-related or public defense legal experience desired
Individuals who have lived experience with the punishment system encouraged to apply.
