The USC Institute for Intersectionality and Social Transformation (USC-IIST) and the USC Dornsife Center for Leadership by Women of Color were established in 2020 by an interdisciplinary group of faculty at the University of Southern California to conduct pathbreaking basic and applied research that has broad civic impact.Â We work at the intersection of education and public sectors, and collaborate across sectors to conduct community-engaged research.Â Both academic units are searching for a project specialist who can offer strong logistical and project-based coordination, particularly coordination of deliverables and logistical planning across related but distinct programmatic efforts.
This is a contract funded position.
The project specialist is responsible for a wide range of project-based coordination tasks, including the creation and monitoring of project delivery timelines and follow up actions that maximize project outcomes. The project specialist must be organized and have a proven ability to track and complete deadline-driven projects in a context that is responsive to circumstances on the ground (e.g. COVID19, social activism) and thus changing frequently.
Specific Job Responsibilities
Work closely with the Director to understand each projectâs scope of work and required deliverables to provide necessary project support
Effectively and efficiently manage Directorâs schedule to maximize overall project productivity
Coordinate project meetings/events via Zoom (including in-person meetings and events when it is again safe to do so); confirm speakers and attendees; scout sites and organize vendor lists; order catering and meeting materials; provide tech support during meetings (i.e. serve as Zoom host; ensure screen sharing and other AV features are working properly)
Follow-up on meeting action items to track and ensure completion among project team
Organize project collaboration tools for maximum impact (e.g. Google Drive, Slack, Microsoft Teams, etc.)
Manage calendar and reminders for funder reports and general project deliverables
Collate and share trends in social justice and movement building across a wide variety of communities for team-building purposes
Conduct preliminary searches regarding new topics and projects and prepare summaries in advance of meetings with new potential partners
Assist with the preparation of and ensuring final approvals of academic articles and/or community reports
Coordinate with University Advancement and other development partners to properly steward organizational funders
Support the development of collaborative relationships with our civic and community-based partners
Conduct general research, schedule site visits/client meetings, and find resources to support effective project management
Reflect the values of USC-IIST and the Center for Leadership by Women of Color by representing both organizations with integrity, excellence, and a commitment to values of equity and justice
Bachelorâs Degree in a related field (public policy, political science, sociology, nonprofit management) required. Equivalent life experience accepted with demonstration of required skill set.
Outstanding communication skills (oral and written), interpersonal skills, and the ability to build deeply collaborative relationships with individuals from a variety of life experiences are a must, as are strong time management and organizational skills. Strong Microsoft Office tools facility (Outlook/PowerPoint/Excel/Word /Publisher) required. Social media and online design/communications skills (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Hootsuite, Canva, MailChimp) desired but not required.
