University Relations is looking for a Senior Strategic Communications Specialist to join our Strategic Communications team, this position will have a primary focus of leveraging division and university resources to raise the visibility of Cornell University around the world. What you will do:
The Senior Strategic Communications Specialist (SSCS) reports to the Deputy Director of Strategic Communications and partners with division and college/unit stakeholders to design communication strategies that connect the mission, goals, priorities and accomplishments to both internal and external audiences using various methods and platforms. This work includes developing and formalizing project requirements/scope; assigning resources; setting project deadlines and conceptualizing project specifications.
Attends regular meetings with division staff, project teams, and university stakeholders, as required. Meet and collaborate with clients to assess solutions to meet communication needs; may act as internal expert to departments in matters related to communications and public relations. Serve as a portfolio manager; participate as an internal expert on committees that support university priorities/initiatives. Foster on-going relationships with administrators, staff and faculty to keep current on key issues, projects and accomplishments. May oversees the editorial guidelines and production of internal communications, such as employee and student newsletters.
Developing messaging and creative content that is in alignment with the university's strategic vision and mission for use on external-facing platforms and audiences, including Cornell's flagship website (cornell.edu) and primary social media channels, and for internal audiences, including leadership messages and internal communications. Messaging may be in direct support of university leadership for priority projects or initiatives; may assist Media Relations Office on media holding statements or other responses as they relate to assigned portfolio areas. Prepare and deliver information to diverse audiences ensuring the appropriate communication style, operate mass messaging platforms correctly, and all necessary appropriate approvals. Collects, analyzes and reports on performance metrics, as appropriate. Assist StratComm team with copy editing, as needed. May handle sensitive or confidential information.
This position is located in Ithaca, New York. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the University's need to limit the number of on-campus employees, the successful applicant will be asked to perform this role remotely at a location of their choice in the United States for a limited period of time until the University can permit more employees to work on campus.
The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
The position has an anticipated start date of July 2021.

You will need:
Bachelor's Degree in a related field (e.g. communications, public relations, journalism) and three to five years' experience in writing and editing in a professional setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Writing and editing experience: The successful candidate must be an experienced, talented writer and editor who can work on deadline in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects. Versatility as a writer; must be able to communicate well using various styles and media. Ability to edit communications for a variety of platforms, audiences and stakeholders; familiarity with AP Style guidelines. Prior experience in digital publication development and strong working knowledge of editorial processes.
Communication and collaboration skills: Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and ability to build and maintain positive relationships with a wide variety of individuals and stakeholders across the university. Successful experience as both an independent and team player is critical.
Independence and judgment: Ability to work independently and use sound judgment in decision making, including setting and managing priorities and meeting competing deadlines. Ability to exercise discretion, maintain confidentiality and present a strong service orientation.
Flexibility and Multitasking: Flexibility in handling and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously. Desire to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to adapt to changing priorities, as well as evolving technology platforms.
Detail orientation: Must be detail oriented and highly analytical.
Initiative: Frequently and appropriately demonstrates initiative.
Computer skills: Candidates must have knowledge of and at least intermediate skill level with Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, content management systems.
This role requires occasional work on nights and weekends.

Experience in communications, journalism, public relations, educational or other nonprofit environment preferred. Knowledge of research university climate highly desirable.
Ability to navigate senior-level administrators, faculty and staff to execute assignments.
Able to develop and maintain good working relationships with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
Proficiency in emerging digital/social platforms.
