The Manager, Digital develops, oversees, and contributes to the success of HHMI’s digital projects, systems, and staff. As a member of the Communications team, the Manager, Digital collaborates within the team and with colleagues across HHMI to deliver communications that advance HHMI’s research and education mission, day-to-day business needs, and inclusive culture.
Reporting to the Director of Editorial, the Manager oversees systems, projects, and people that drive digital strategy and enhance HHMI’s brand reputation. The position manages HHMI’s flagship website (hhmi.org) and digital communications projects. This position calls for an individual who is technically skilled, customer-focused, and committed to partnering with diverse stakeholders to maintain and continuously improve HHMI’s communications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy & Project Management
Drive ongoing digital strategy for HHMI.org to ensure high-quality user experience and content that reflects the Institute’s strategic direction and brand.
Contribute to content strategy, distribution, and evaluation of digital content and creative assets for program announcements, operations initiatives, and other special projects.
Consult and work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure the site reflects HHMI’s programs and priorities.
Develop a keen understanding of the key audiences of hhmi.org and develop strategies to meet evolving needs.
May occasionally serve as project manager for key Communications campaigns, working within cross-functional teams to execute on a variety of deliverables.
Continuously improve the effectiveness of HHMI Communications by building strong routines, processes, and documentation for digital work, and by facilitating strong communication on project teams, within the digital team, and with stakeholders.
Lead efforts to develop analytics and metrics reporting to proactively identify opportunities and provide recommendations to maximize website effectiveness, increase traffic, and enhance usability.
Stay abreast of digital communications trends, technologies, and opportunities, to advance our work and implement best practices.
Systems & Content Management
Oversee content production and management for hhmi.org
Manage direct report(s) responsible for content production for hhmi.org
Ensure published content is updated, accurate, and optimized
Implement best practices for effective design, layout, and functionality
Serve as business owner for HHMI.org, coordinating with technology teams and stakeholders to manage site enhancements and projects to improve site design and function. Act as the primary liaison for Communications with IT and represent Communications on cross-departmental planning groups.
Collaborate and consult with content owners and editors across the organization to provide technical and strategic guidance, assess digital communications needs, and evaluate requests.
As needed, consult on other digital properties such as Janelia.org, and our intranet.
Provide support and training on digital tools and strategy to content owners across the organization.
Ensure digital asset management systems are maintained and optimized
Supervise, train, and develop at least one direct report: Web and Digital Specialist.
Manage work with external agencies and contractors, ensuring a transparent and integrated workflow in a positive, creative environment.
Act a trusted consultant and advisor to a variety of stakeholders. Build and maintain strong, cross-departmental, collaborative relationships with program and operational staff.
Actively participate in the continuous improvement and development of the communications team and function at HHMI
Five to seven years of experience managing web content and complex digital projects, with at least two years supervisory experience (can include project teams)
Experience collaborating closely with stakeholders who are technical experts, such as scientists or other professionals preferred
Skills and Abilities
Creative vision and technical skills to translate needs and ideas into digital products.
Experience working with content management systems, specifically the administrative functions, configuration, and theming options in Drupal.
Ability to translate customer needs into technical requirements and explain technical issues to a layperson.
Demonstrated project management experience, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Thorough understanding of analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics and Tag Manager) and how to use insights from data to improve digital products
Understanding of web best practices and standards, including 508 compliance, SEO, and user experience. Familiarity with common research techniques and user-testing.
Knowledge of: HTML, CSS, and dynamic content; online production environments; project management tools; task management systems (e.g., Jira); and digital asset management systems (e.g., Cumulus)
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud and basic design and production skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; openness to experimentation and ability to manage creative tension. Ability to thrive in a heavily matrixed, complex, dynamic environment and develop trust and credibility with a wide range of staff.
