Minnesota Diversified Industries (“MDI”) is a leader in manufacturing corrugated standard and custom plastic packaging solutions and production assembly. Headquartered in Minneapolis, with additional locations in Hibbing, Grand Rapids and Cohasset, MDI offers an unparalleled customer experience while providing high quality products and services to businesses and organizations.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit through a Social Enterprise model, MDI creates employee self-sufficiency by providing meaningful work in an inclusive environment, with nearly half of the workforce comprised of people with documented disabilities. Employees have access to Employment Support Specialists for job placement services, and are paid a living-wage with full benefits. This integrated workforce helps to manufacture a wide variety of totes, trays and boxes sold to businesses across the country. The highly capable and dedicated team also offers production services such as kitting, packaging, palletizing and assembly. Controlled environment production services are also offered in MDI’s newly constructed white room. The Organization operates using the Traction model and is ISO 9001 & 13485 certified.
MDI is guided by their mission, vision and values, and these statements guide the energy and spirit of the Organization:
Mission: Serve people with disabilities by offering inclusive employment opportunities and services.
Vision: Meaningful employment opportunities for all people with disabilities.
Values: Employee & Customer First, Positive Attitude, Respectful, Do the Right Thing & Empower Individual Ability.
Since the 1960’s, MDI has served as a Social Enterprise pioneer, gaining momentum through the addition of flagship customers who have been important partners in its growth. MDI’s annual revenues are approximately $30MM and the workforce is roughly 375, though these figures fluctuate according to customer demands. Currently, MDI is responding to a temporary surge in demand, hiring more than 200 additional contract workers to complete a $15MM order for 3MM containers. MDI has also had success with customer, product and service diversification to support their growth, and grants and other fundraising efforts are slated to contribute an increasing level of support to MDI’s goals of increasing revenue, improving profit margins and employing more people with disabilities. New visionary leadership will further diversify the business to sustain a steadier state of employment for the workers, and to achieve the organizational goal of positively influencing 2500 people’s lives by 2026 through living-wage employment and other support services. MDI is committed to thought leadership on advancing employment opportunities for people with disabilities and has recently joined forces with organizations like Medtronic and Special Olympics to form the Unified Work Coalition.
