The Director leads the Student Center for Social Justice and Identity (SCSJI) in the Dean of Students division at Vanderbilt University and is primarily responsible for coordinating all services, advising, and support for multicultural, international, and underrepresented students within the University's student engagement and leadership model in support of the mission and strategic plan. More specifically, the Director will develop and execute strategic initiatives, programming, and support for the multicultural, international, and underrepresented student leaders and organizations on the Vanderbilt campus. The Director will serve as a campus expert on cultural competence for purposes of training and implementing programs for student leaders and organizations. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: office operations; supervision of other full- and part-time staff, including Program Coordinators, Graduate Assistants, interns, practicum students, or employees, as assigned; office and programmatic budget oversight; program planning and execution; facilitation of cultural competence trainings; departmental collaborations and committee work on issues of diversity and inclusion; and the completion of administrative tasks.
SCSJI is an office within the Student Engagement and Leadership area of the Dean of Students division. The mission of SCSJI is to promote an environment of cultural competency, inclusivity, and awareness within the student population on the Vanderbilt campus. Its vision is to provide comprehensive advising and training services to ensure inclusive and culturally engaged student leaders and organizations dedicated to all forms of racial, cultural, gender, religious, ability, and sexual identity expression. Duties and Responsibilities
Provide leadership on departmental and divisional efforts to design, implement, and assess a comprehensive package of training and other programs for student leaders and organizations that facilitate personal and organizational development around issues, including creating inclusive group environments, social justice, and cultural competence.
Design, implement, and assess SCSJI's culturally relevant programming initiatives to meet the needs and honor the experiences of multicultural and international students in the student leadership and organizational contexts.
Coordinate SCSJI's satellite service opportunities, such as the weekly Open Space with the University Counseling Center.
Collaborate with Dean of Students departments, the residential colleges' staff and faculty, and other University constituents to design, implement, and assess multicultural programming for student leaders and organizations.
Develop and facilitate initiatives to engage and connect current students to alumni as it relates to leadership opportunities.
Engage with the Nashville community and agencies and nonprofit organizations through relevant program and initiatives that support the office's mission.
Support student leaders and organizations, as appropriate, related to campus diversity issues, student activism, and bias incidents.
Manage SCSJI's internal business processes for student organizations.
Advise key multicultural student organizations.
Assist international and multicultural students with the organization and planning of major student organization events to ensure the successful execution of events that support and celebrate student experiences and adhere to University policies.
Advise student organizations on goal setting as well as the development and implementation of organizational community action plans that create more meaningful experiences for their members and leaders.
Attend student organization executive board meetings, as needed, to demonstrate support for student leaders.
Support student organization initiatives with regards to advocacy, inclusivity, and diversity education to improve the experience for multicultural and international students.
Inform students of changes to student organization policies and procedures that enable them to more effectively manage their organization.
Utilize budgeting skills to support successful financial management and use of Oracle by student leaders and organizations.
Develop and implement assessment plan for the office.
Generate reports and provide assessment date for inclusion in Dean of Students annual report and other University efforts and initiatives.
Advise multicultural student organizations in developing, maintaining, and conducting effective and culturally relevant assessment activities.
Work with colleagues to create and implement pre- and post-test assessment tools to measure participant learning and programmatic goals.
Analyze and share data as it relates to the overall mission of SCSJI and its programming to enable the university to more effectively support multicultural and international students.
Analyze the impact of assessment as it relates to the overall mission of IICC.
Oversee all of SCSJI's office and business operations, spaces, services, programs, and initiatives to achieve departmental and divisional goals.
Provide financial oversight for SCSJI, including full responsibility for the preparation and management of relevant budgets to ensure responsible allocation of resources.
Recruit, hire, train and supervise SCSJI staff, and provide ongoing feedback to staff in performance improvement.
Develop and maintain office protocols and policies to provide clear expectations for staff members and enable them to meet student needs.
Thoroughly document, narrate and identify trends regarding the historical and current experiences of multicultural and international students as they matriculate through Vanderbilt.
Assist with maintaining SCSJI and student organization records and documents on Anchor Link to support organizational continuity.
Facilitate agreements and contracts for speakers, performers, and approved vendors in a timely manner.
Complete and maintain records of program reviews and evaluations to support and enhance organizational effectiveness.
Serve on divisional committees and working groups to enrich the experience and resources available to staff across the division.
Participate in division wide events as needed (Move-In Day, Rites of Spring, Diverse 'Dores Day, MLK Day, etc.) to support colleagues and ensure these events run smoothly.
Maintain an understanding of institutional and departmental financial policies related to areas such as travel, procurement, expense, and time reporting to ensure compliance and proper stewardship of university resources.
Demonstrate a willingness to support colleagues across the division in order to encourage the implementation or fulfillment of divisional goals and strategic priorities.
This position supervises the SCSJI staff, including Program Coordinators, Graduate Assistants, interns, practicum students, or employees, as assigned; this position reports administratively and functionally to the Senior Director for Student Engagement and Leadership.
