In this role, you will drive an exciting portfolio of global academic initiatives, including transforming the CPA licensure model, growing the CGMA designation, and galvanizing innovation among academics, universities and other influencers of the next generation of the profession.
This seat at the table is reserved for the applicant who can unite our profession’s deep history, dynamics of today’s academic environment and the leaps necessary for future success. As Academic in Residence, you will use your experience, expertise and network to advise the Association on university and academic endeavors, provide leadership for programs that attract talented individuals to become CPAs and CGMAs, promote AICPA’s initiatives in higher education, foster deeper university faculty relationships and facilitate academic research supported by the Association.
This position has significant impact on the overall organization given the critical role academics and universities play in the accounting ecosystem and their impact on the student pipeline. Colleagues will rely on you to provide expert input on programs and resources relating to the academics. And you will be the face of the Association for universities, a key liaison to ensure the Association has a deep understanding of the needs and interests of the universities. In addition, the role influences other key stakeholders, organizations, board, associations and committees that impact accounting education, often at the CEO and COO level. Your role will be instrumental in achieving key Association strategic initiatives.
This position will:
Co-lead on academic efforts to implement the CPA Evolution initiative, which aims to transform the CPA licensure model to recognize the rapidly changing skills and competencies the practice of accounting requires today and will require in the future. This includes working with the academics, universities and the profession to provide focus and leadership in the development of resources, strategies and programs to support the accounting curriculum and education in universities.
Provide leadership and operational excellence in the development of programs, initiatives, tactics and student recruitment campaigns to raise awareness of the CPA and CGMA professions and attract and retain talented students and young professionals into the study of accounting and CPA and CGMA careers at the high school and college level.
Develop and enhance Association relations with academics, academic associations, CPA and CGMA associations to support global efforts around professional accounting, CPA and CGMA, including representing the Association and AICPA on influential boards and committees. Globally, it implements strategy for working with management accounting academics, enhancing understanding of Association designations by creating relationships, resources and programs that educate and raise awareness.
Provide strategic focus and management of academic communications, studies, metrics, reporting and messaging, including The Trends Report and the Accounting Education Center website.
Liaise with internal teams to make recommendations on products and service offerings to increase the Association’s presence in university classrooms. Work directly on university product strategy.
Provide leadership and the strategic direction for AICPA’s Academic Executive Committee (AEC) and other internal committees, boards and programs. Work on par with, and influence external leaders in the profession and academia at the highest levels in the development of education policies, programs and positions.
Provide strategic guidance and ensure appropriate and effective administrative and management support is provided to the Federation of Schools of Accountancy (FSA) and Beta Alpha Psi (BAP); participate in board and annual meetings as necessary. Serve as the AICPA liaison to the BAP Board.
The successful candidate will have:
Deep knowledge of and an established reputation in accounting and finance academic environments
Excellent networking skills with the ability to build strong relationships and influence stakeholders at the CEO level
Knowledge of accounting and finance students educational considerations, their career decision-making process and the ability to influence those who influence it
Relationship building skills to work collaboratively with outside organizations, academic and association leadership
Interpersonal and communication skills in writing, speaking and formal presentations
Global mindset with proven leadership and management skills
Change leadership skills, ability to work in a matrixed environment

10+ years’ experience as an accounting academic at an accredited institution, including administrative positions
10+ years creating resources and programs for academics and students
Leadership positions outside of university setting
Board and committee experience
People management experience
Background in university-level educational programming, curriculum development, culture and values
PhD and CPA; CGMA or commitment to obtain
Telecommuting is allowed.
