Headquartered in Boston with offices in Minneapolis and New York and a content network that spans the globe, Public Radio Exchange (PRX) is a leading non-profit media company specializing in audio journalism and storytelling. PRX believes strong public media is anchored in journalism, strengthened with diverse voices and amplified by innovative technology.
Founded in 2003 and created through a collaboration of the Station Resource Group and Atlantic Public Media, PRX is one of three major public media networks. However, PRX goes beyond the boundaries of how public media is defined. Distinguished as being “born digital” and regarded by many as the “R&D arm” in the space, PRX is known for being on the forefront of podcasting and for bridging public media with media in the public interest. With an emphasis on innovation and experimentation, grounded firmly in design-thinking and synergistic partnerships within and outside of public media, PRX builds technology and creates cutting-edge content that reaches millions of listeners worldwide. Thus, PRX is shaping the future of audio by connecting talented producers with their most engaged, supportive audiences. Named one of Fast Company’s "Ten Most Innovative Companies in Media" in both 2015 and 2017, the company has pioneered new approaches to technology and talent.
In August 2018, PRX and PRI (Public Radio International), one of the largest program producers and distributors of public radio in the world, merged to create a new public media company designed to support the next generation of producers and to serve listeners who demand the highest-quality content. Fueling the combined organization is a $10 million commitment from WGBH, the preeminent public broadcaster and largest producer of PBS content for TV and web. The funds will be directed to new content development, including enhancements to PRI’s The World, the creation of an audio production studio, and to open new PRX Podcast Garages beyond the flagship Boston location.
The 2018 merger of PRX and PRI brought together two competing but distinct entities, both created with the spirit of rebellion to crack otherwise closed systems. The organizations integrated their mutual expertise in journalism, storytelling, technology and training across a significant broadcast and podcast portfolio and emerged as a new, scaled and connected public media designed for the next generation of engaged listeners --the re-branded PRX of today. The organization has grown staff, board and budget, and has dramatically expanded its program portfolio. Under the inspired leadership of Chief Executive Officer Kerri Hoffman, PRX is well positioned to continue to challenge the status quo in public media and to be a platform for fostering understanding in the world – thus being a catalyst for social discourse and social change. In order for PRX to achieve its sweeping ambition to shape the future of audio, the organization will need to significantly grow contributed revenue, particularly vis-a-vis individual major gifts. PRX and PRI came together with distinctly different fundraising operations, with PRX predominately supported by institutional sources and micro- donations, and PRI with a legacy of more traditional major gift focused support led by a highly philanthropic board of directors. Since the merger, PRX has strengthened its development operation by adding an enhanced donor data management system, strategically integrating major and micro giving, and implementing effective moves management practices that emphasize donor retention and increased giving. The Board of Directors is now a 100% giving board, yet there is significant work to be done to build a deeper pipeline of donors with the capacity to make high-impact gifts. The uncertainty regarding philanthropy in this unprecedented time of the COVID-19 crisis has added a new level of complexity, yet PRX remains optimistic about its ability to grow revenue which is backed by its rich history of loyal and passionate financial contributors and by its many compelling and inspirational offerings for donor support.
PRX seeks a Chief Development Officer (CDO) who will lead the strategic design and execution of a comprehensive national fundraising program consistent with PRX’s reputation for innovation, disruption and excellence. The CDO will oversee the adoption of benchmark best practices and the development of creative strategies to grow PRX’s major donor base and philanthropic revenue. This individual will provide direction and oversight for seven-person development staff across two cities (Minneapolis and Boston), with team members organized today around major individual giving, institutional support and digital fundraising. The CDO will embody the highest standards of professionalism in developing fundraising systems and in executing high-touch frontline fundraising: as an influential member of PRX’s senior team; as an effective partner to the PRX CEO and PRX’s Board of Directors; as a mentor and role model for the development and support staffs; and as a lead ambassador to high-level partners and donors.
