Founded in 1985 by visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist Frank Hawkins Kenan, the Institute is a research, outreach, and strategic planning arm of Kenan-Flagler Business School with the mission of developing and promoting innovative, market-based solutions to vital economic issues. The nonprofit institute and its affiliated centers convene leaders from the private sector, academic community and government to build a greater understanding of how private sector business can work for the public good. The Institute’s economic development initiatives have recently been combined into a new effort dedicated to economic development with the aim of improving economic performance and informing policy. The Executive Director of CREATE develops research initiatives and communications; oversees staff; oversees strategic planning; and maintains and expands stakeholder relationships as it relates to the Kenan Institute’s economic development goals.
Specifically, the position works collaboratively with the CREATE Faculty Director, senior Kenan Institute leadership, Kenan-Flagler faculty, and other researchers across and beyond UNC to ensure that the Kenan Institute remains on the forefront of economic development best practice in research, data analytics, translation, and impact, according to its mission and reputation. The Executive Director will present key research at business, policy, and academic events as well as on broadcast and other media. Additionally, the Executive Director, CREATE Faculty Director and the Managing Director of the Kenan Institute work collaboratively with Kenan Institute leadership, Kenan-Flagler Business School, university leaders, and others to develop, manage and oversee the strategic plan. The position manages the internal and external stakeholder relationships critical to the success and reputation of the Kenan Institute; and oversees considerable programmatic, educational, e-services, and external relations including business development and building relationships in efforts to secure funding to support the initiatives of CREATE. The position reports to the Managing Director of the Kenan Institute and is a member of the senior affiliated leadership team of the Kenan Institute.
Education and Experience:
Seven years of relevant experience is required. At least five years of experience in an academic setting is preferred, including experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and experience as a manager of people and process. Successful candidates will possess a style that is entrepreneurial, strategic, results-oriented, empathetic, and be skilled at cultivating and sustaining networks in the public and private sectors. The ability to work effectively in an academic, policy and business environment in which collaborative decision-making occurs is expected, as well as outstanding written and verbal communication skills with both the business and policy communities. The successful candidate will possess experience designing, supervising and/or implementing findings from research.
