We are currently seeking a SystemsÂÂ Administrator II to join the USC Provost IT department within the Office of the Provost. The Systems Administrator II will be tasked with providing essential day-to-day support of servers, networks, software, and overall IT infrastructure for the executive offices of the university, including the Office of the Provost, the Office of Research, USC Student Affairs, Strategic and Global Initiatives, as well as numerous other USC offices, departments, and divisions. Under the direction of a Senior Systems Administrator, the Systems Administrator II will work as part of a small team to manage, troubleshoot and grow a mixed but primarily Microsoft-based, multi-site environment which consists of database, web, file, application, virtualization and email servers, and various other technologies. He/she will also assist with launching new services, improving existing services, supporting end user systems and, where necessary, performing helpdesk-related responsibilities.
USC Provost IT is the information technology services department of the USC Office of the Provost. We provide various IT services, including infrastructure and application services, technical support, and web development and design, to over sixty-five university divisions, departments, and offices. We take pride in partnering with business units to deliver reliable, effective and secure information technology solutions which empower users and improve department business processes, redefining how IT is delivered within a higher education setting. The ideal candidate for this position should possess a minimum of two years of experience with systems administration as well as a strong understanding of server operating systems, server hardware, databases, and backups and disaster recovery methodologies. He/she should be able to document and configure systems to be consistent with university policies/procedures, clearly communicate technical information both verbally and in writing, perform multiple tasks concurrently, respond to emergency situations effectively, and establish and maintain cooperation, understanding, trust and credibility with clients.
Must have a Bachelorâs degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Minimum of two years of experience with systems administration
Customer service experience within an IT department
Experience with Windows Server administration, including technologies such as Active Directory and IIS
Experience with Microsoft SQL server or other relational database technologies
Experience with VMware virtualization technologies and environments (vSphere 6)
Demonstrated experience with systems administration duties and tasks, including operating system internals, server hardware platforms, and backup systems
Typically possesses experience with information security concepts and technologies, including hardware and software firewalls, server security best practices and vulnerability management
Typically possesses knowledge of enterprise storage technologies and systems, including enterprise storage arrays, RAID, iSCSI, and file sharing systems
Typically possesses some experience with networking technologies or concepts, including with IP subnets, network troubleshooting, VLAN configurations, basic routing and switching
Typically possesses knowledge of enterprise monitoring and configuration management tools such as Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager and System Center Operations Manager
Must have exceptional troubleshooting/debugging skills and a desire to see a problem through to its resolution
Must possess strong written and oral communication skills
Must be able and willing to work on-call hours as needed

Leads, maintains and administers computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations
Monitors systems, servers and auxiliary devices for performance and security. Determines whether adjustments need to be made and confers with technical support staff and vendors as appropriate. Identifies changes that need to be made in the future
Troubleshoots and identifies hardware and software problems in a timely manner; resolves routine problems, replaces defective components and researches resources to identify solutions. Refers more complex problems to appropriate staff for resolution
Installs, tests, implements, and assists users with the implementation of new hardware, software, and applications
Performs data backups and disaster recovery operations. Repairs and/or recovers systems.
Designs, configures, and tests computer hardware, networking software and operating system software
Assigns, modifies, and deletes user accounts and resolves security access problems; maintains integrity of the security system
Reviews current technical information pertaining to the operation of computers, servers, peripheral equipment and software
Develops documentation for systems administration procedures
Stays informed of new developments and technologies
Serves as a point of escalation for unusually complex technical users encountered by end users
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time
Three years of experience with systems administration, backups, operating systems programming languages and associated hardware platforms
Experience in SQL database administration, database performance tuning and/or troubleshooting, and Microsoft SQL features such as SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
Experience maintaining and/or designing highly available systems or applications
Experience with PowerShell and a desire to use these technologies to automate routine systems-related tasks
Experience with enterprise network technologies and protocols, including router or switch configurations and IP network troubleshooting
Experience with underlying server security practices, principles and technologies, including server hardening, network security, and protections steps and methods against common attack vectors
Experience with cloud platforms and technologies, including Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services
Experience providing direct support to executive management
Experience in a higher education or nonprofit organization setting
