This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority. A Campus Security Authority (or CSA) is defined as an “official of the institution with significant responsibility for student and campus activities.” A CSA is required to immediately report any crime that is reported to them to the University Police who will then review, evaluate, and investigate the reported crime. Annual training is required by the Department of Education for all personnel who have been designated as a Campus Security Authority.

Chief Objective of Position
The Internship Coordinator will develop and deliver programming to increase awareness about and student participation in internships, contribute to employer development initiatives, counsel students on their career plans, and promote the value of a Christopher Newport liberal arts education to students, employers, faculty, graduate school recruiters, parents and the community.
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM MANAGEMENT: Coordinate student programming related to internships including workshops on how to find internships and maximize the internship experience, and facilitate opportunities for students to understand and communicate the value of internships. Meet with students individually to advise students on how to find internships. Collaborate with faculty, staff, parents, and alumni to develop internship opportunities. Research and understand internship trends and communicate to invested members of the Christopher Newport community. Interface with faculty to understand internship course requirements by academic discipline and encourage faculty to promote internships to their students. Maintain a blog or online platform for students to share reflections on internship experiences. Coordinate summer activities survey to document activities of students between junior and senior years. Oversee instruction of a 1-credit course, The Internship: A Course for Your Career. Identify projects for student interns in the Center and work with the Career Operations Manager to assign tasks to the student staff. Design and present workshops on topics such as the internship and job process, career fair and interview preparation, and resume and cover letter writing.
CAREER COUNSELING: Provide information, advice and programming to students and alumni of all majors and class years to facilitate the career planning process. Teach students how to use career-related technology including Handshake at CNU, LinkedIn, the Center for Career Planning (CCP) website, and other career development resources. Review and offer feedback on resumes, cover letters, graduate school personal statements, and other career-related documents.
EMPLOYER DEVELOPMENT AND RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: Assist employer development team, employers, and faculty and staff with development of internship, job and career opportunities and support employer and graduate school-related outreach efforts and activities. Advise employers on best practices for internships and recommend strategies for employers in building their brands on campus. Participate in various local, state, regional, and national organizations, conferences, and recruitment events to increase internship and employment opportunities for students. Coordinate campus recruiting opportunities. Approve internship, fellowship and experiential learning job postings in Handshake at CNU.
COLLABORATION WITH CAMPUS CONSTITUENCIES: Communicate the value of a Christopher Newport liberal arts and sciences education to a wide variety of constituents including students, recruiters, parents, alumni, and faculty/staff. Promote student programming and recruitment events. Collaborate with student groups, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and recruiters to deliver requested programs such as a major-or industry-specific career panels and workshops and to increase awareness of and usage for the Center for Career Planning. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of career services and best practices including employer development and recruitment methodologies, and the application of technology in the delivery of services. Serve on University committees and attend various Christopher Newport functions.

Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Student Personnel Services, Business or related area; or Bachelor’s Degree in related field and experience that equates to an advanced degree.
Experience assisting individuals in the identification and achievement of their career goals; Experience educating job seekers on resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills, and job search techniques (to include job search web tools such as LinkedIn and other forms of social media); Experience utilizing electronic job searching and databases; Utilization of an online recruitment database, such as CSO Research; Experience designing, developing and implementing workshops and/or seminars; Demonstrated evidence of planning and executing large-scale events; Experience building relationships with a variety of constituents; Experience working with college student populations and/or in the field of higher education.
Experience in a career services office or related area in higher education; Experience with experiential learning programs to include internships, externships, and volunteer work; Experience managing campus recruitment programs to include automated on-campus interview schedules; Experience with CSO Research career management software; Experience advising, counseling and coaching college students on their career plans; Experience working in career development in higher education; Experience working with recruitment staff at businesses, nonprofits and graduate schools to develop opportunities for internships, post-graduation employment and graduate school admission; Experience counseling liberal arts students; Prior experience with coordinating career fairs, on-campus interviews, and other career programs.
