The position will be a time-limited appointment and initially not include the practice of law, until the successful candidate is able to meet all requirements established by the State Bar and relevant North Carolina law to form a separate public service law firm whose sole purpose is to benefit and provide legal services to the students of UNC Charlotte. The person will be expected to work with UNC Charlotte Student Government Association, employees from the Division of Student Affairs, and employees from the Office of Legal Affairs to:
Draft and file UNC Charlotte Student Legal Services (SLS) governing documents.
Identify UNC Charlotte SLS board members.
Apply for nonprofit status/tax exemption with the State of North Carolina and the Internal Revenue Service.
Procure all necessary registrations/applications with the North Carolina State Bar, including the establishment and maintenance of a Legal Services Plan.
Negotiate a Memorandum of Understanding with UNC Charlotte outlining the scope of services, limitations on practice, conflict of interest policy, and other mutual expectations as between the parties.
Secure all necessary insurance, audit services, bank or trust accounts, and other operational components to operate the public interest law firm.
Identify any staffing our other resources necessary for successful deployment of the UNC Charlotte Student Legal Services.
Market the forthcoming existence of the UNC Charlotte SLS begin to serve as a resource to students consistent with any limitations on engaging in the practice of law.
Propose and secure a student fee sufficient to fund future operations of the UNC Charlotte Student Legal Services.
Minimum Experience / Education:
Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
Minimum 5 years' experience practicing law with a demonstrated interest in public service law.
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to manage a diverse practice Experience in either: higher education, legal aid/public service, or solo practitioner/small law firm.
Experience managing and operating a law firm.
Strong work ethic; high moral and ethical standards that reflect honesty, integrity, and reliability.
