The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
The C-AD / E lectron I on C ollider (EIC R&D) Division has an opening for an Advanced Technical Associate in the e-source development group to establish and operate the new Electron Source Laboratory(ESL), to provide stat of the art cathodes for the Low Energy RHIC electron Cooling Project(LEReC), Coherent electron Cooling (CeC) proof of principal experiment, to perform advanced cathode R&D and development the Polarized e- Source and pre-injector systems for the BNL-EIC.
Under the technical direction of the group leader, the selected candidate will detail existing equipment, provide fabrication drawings for new components and assemblies used in vacuum and other mechanical systems using 3D design software, fabricate, assemble, test, and operate equipment and systems for the ESL. You will be encouraged to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgement to plan, coordinate, and perform design, manufacturing, testing and system operations to achieve the programmatic priorities associated with the above projects and experiments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Build accurate, detailed 3D system designs as well as mechanical manufacturing drawings to detail current and new system components
Perform mechanical design independently with general direction and review by a mechanical engineer or scientist
Perform vacuum system component design, manufacturing, preparation and assembly
Develop components and systems from initial concept through engineering analysis, detailed 3D modeling and design, developing purchase documents and fabrication drawings, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning
Apply knowledge of materials properties in the selection of materials and machine shop practices to perform the fabrication of custom components to detailed tolerances
Coordination with a variety of technical staff in C-AD shops and facilities for fabrication, assembly, testing and installation of equipment
Apply knowledge of clean room design, standards and practices to establish rated clean areas in the ESL
Assembly and/or repair cathode production systems and associated subsystems
Coordinate ESL operations and participate in development and improvement of associated projects
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires the equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or engineering field, plus extensive job-relevant training
Minimum ten (10) years in-depth and related experience in a broad technical field that must include manufacturing practices, mechanical design and clean room practices
Be factual of material properties and their selection in component design and manufacturing
Experience with high and ultra-high vacuum components and systems.
Experience with 3D CAD software such as Solid Works and/or Autodesk Inventor
Most have good technical communication skills for communication with engineers, and physicists, reporting changes and modifications and with technical staff who install and maintain equipment
Must be able to review and check the 3D models and fabrication drawings
Work hands on with mechanical equipment, and/or with a team to develop and build outstanding equipment.
Extensive experience with clean room design, standards and practices
Experienced with moving and setting up of clean manufacturing equipment and facilities
Excellent written and oral skills and proficient with MS Office and MS Excel
Ability to use standard machine shop equipment and hand tools for the manufacture and assembly of mechanical components
Ability to work independently and as a team member
Must be available for overtime and off hours call ins as required
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Physics with relevant work experience.
Experience in designing systems and components for cryogenics, high voltage and/or high current systems.
Experience with acute vacuum components used for high current electron sources.
Experience maintaining and solving electrical and mechanical systems.
Possess knowledge of basic circuit principles and be familiar with standard electronic measurement equipment such as multi-meters and oscilloscopes, and their operating principles.
Extensive knowledge of machine shop practices with 20+ years of relevant experience.
Experience with optical/laser systems, electrical systems and electro-magnets
Ability to positively interact and support contractors, vendors, and procurement professionals.
Familiarity with ASME/ASCE standards, building codes, NFPA and OSHA requirement and ANSI Y14.5 drawing standards.
Basic understanding of electronic circuits and schematics.
Ability to analyze system failure, fix, and resolve problems during failure situations.
Project development and management skills.
Professional Engineering or Engineer in Training license.
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements
Individual will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker and may be required to work in radiation areas.
Individual may be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights or weekends to support critical projects.
Ability to lift 30 pounds.
Ability to work inside a 5 Gauss magnetic field.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Must have valid driver's license for field inspection and measurement.
Must have good vision and hand dexterity for computer use, delicate mechanical assembly, inspection and measurement.
Ability to climb a ladder and work at heights above 6 feet for system assembly, field inspections and measurement.
