ABOUT IF/WHEN/HOW: LAWYERING FOR REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE
We transform the law and policy landscape through advocacy, support, and organizing so all people have the power to determine if, when, and how to define, create, and sustain families with dignity and to actualize sexual and reproductive wellbeing on their own terms, free from discrimination, coercion, or violence.
We employ five proven modalities - litigation, advocacy, organizing, training, and support - to combat five forms of reproductive oppression ripe for compassionate attention and skillful intervention. Our focus is on improving abortion access, especially for young people, public program participants, and those who self-manage, as well as enhancing resources, dignity, and rights for birthing people and parents. In all we do, we center communities uniquely impacted by criminalization, restrictions, and structural inequities.
By growing and activating legions of legal advocates steeped in reproductive justice values, we work to bring relief to those experiencing reproductive oppression, eliminate its underlying causes, dismantle the structures that uphold it, and construct a new legal foundation for liberation.

THE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER OPPORTUNITY
Joining us amid the exciting growth and transformation sparked by our recent merger, our first Chief Operating Officer (COO) will drive strategy for and execution of our organizational design and change management needs. The COO will partner with our senior management team and leverage external experts to identify and implement the structures that will support us in building the best team and creating a high-performing organization that lives out reproductive justice values in order to fulfill our mission. In addition, the COO will provide leadership to a small team to ensure effective day-to-day operations, with direct supervision of the Operations and Technology Director.
The COO will report to our Managing Director and work in close collaboration with our Executive Director and senior management team, serving as a trusted advisor to our leadership. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in change management, organizational development, and executive leadership and will share our commitment to reproductive and racial justice. They will uphold our values of inclusion, fairness, and transparency and foster strong relationships across our remote organizational structure, demonstrating high levels of communication and integrity.
Lead research, planning, and implementation of strategic changes related to our organizational design and structure; manage internal and external stakeholders toward timelines and deliverables
Advise our Executive Director on the implications of organizational design changes for our governance and external relationships, supporting leadership in informed decision-making
Partner with our Chief Financial Officer and our Development Director to align the infrastructure for our financial management and resource development with our vision for organizational growth and evolution
Collaborate with senior management team and program/functional area leads to facilitate structural changes that best meet the needs of the organization in both the short- and long-term and to ensure support and minimal disruption to staff through any changes
Provide leadership for our talented operations and technology team, including direct supervision of the Operations and Technology Director, ensuring the effective management of our day-to-day operational needs, and support this team's ongoing professional development
Cultivate strong relationships with external advisors, engaging consultants and experts and coordinating these resources in support of our decision-making on organizational structure and operations
Assess organizational risk factors associated with our ongoing growth and development and establish plans to mitigate risk
Advise on the optimal team structure as we continue to grow, including ongoing review of our organizational chart, reporting structures, salary bands as we continue to build, retain, and support an exceptionally talented team
Identify and implement structures and processes for effective collaboration across our virtual/remote organization and growing team
Ensure that all processes and policies are aligned with our values-led, fair, and transparent culture
Work alongside senior management and key consultants to ensure we maintain a supportive, healthy, and inclusive culture as we continue to grow
As the incoming Chief Operating Officer, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
You are a seasoned organizational leader with experience leading through growth, with 10+ years' experience in senior management roles and past success in guiding organizations through merger & acquisition, start-up, or significant restructuring.
You have demonstrated experience in guiding cross-functional projects or teams, engaging stakeholders in areas such as operations, HR, IT, legal, and programs, and can balance the perspectives and needs of a wide range of internal stakeholders.
You are a strategic thinker with strong follow-through and execution, able to guide organizations or teams from vision into implementation.
You demonstrate excellent professional judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to build trust within a rapidly-evolving and values-driven organization.
You share our commitment to racial justice/anti-racist principles; familiarity with the reproductive health, rights, and justice movement is considered a plus.
You are effective leading within a virtual/remote organization; demonstrated prior success in this type of environment is considered a plus.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required; JD, MBA, or related degree is considered a plus.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The annual salary range for this role will be $150,000 - $200,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
We provide a generous benefits package consisting of fully paid insurance coverage for health, vision, dental, life, and disability; flexible spending accounts (FSA) for health, dependent care, and transportation; retirement plan; sick leave, vacation (starting at 15 days a year, on an accrual basis), and holidays (including birthdays), plus a one-week office closure in December. Employees also receive generous professional development stipends and paid membership to bar associations.
In addition to our office in Oakland, CA, we maintain a virtual environment that supports remote working and flexible work days. Our team includes staff in 7 metropolitan areas throughout the US. Reimbursements for co-working spaces and home office equipment and supplies are available.
